On Saturday thousands of pets will find a home as NBC Universal, the Humane Society of the U.S., local NBC affiliate stations like WRAL-TV as well as local animal shelters team up to Clear the Shelters. The nationwide event, will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., it encourages animal adoption by offering interested pet parents the opportunity to bring home a furry friend without the hassle of an adoption fee.

Animal shelters are normally crowded after the spring breeding season, as summer days grow long. Budgets are stretched and space is at a minimum.

WRAL-TV has partnered with eight animal shelters – SPCA of Wake County, Wake County Animal Center, SAFE Haven for Cats, Orange County Animal Services, Moore County Animal Center, Durham Animal Protection Society, Edgecombe County Animal Shelter, Person County Animal Services –to participate in Clear the Shelters.

Each pet shelter will tally adoptions throughout the day to be tracked in real-time and added to adoptions across the country. Almost 20,000 animals found homes in 2015 thanks to Clear the Shelters.
