According to Orlando, Florida police spokeswoman Wanda Miglio, Christina Grimmie, the former star of NBC’s “The Voice” was signing autographs late Friday night when a man armed with two guns walked up to the 22-year-old singer as and opened fire.

Authorities also said the gunman fatally shot himself after Grimmie’s brother tackled him.  Grimmie had performed at The Plaza Live theater Friday night, along with the band Before You Exit, when the shooting broke out.

Afterwards she was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and died only a few hours later.  Her publicist Heather Weiss said in a statement “It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord. She was shot at her show in Orlando and, unfortunately, didn’t survive the gunshot wounds. We ask at this time that you respect the privacy of her family and friends in their time of mourning.”

On social media fans, friends and celebrities showed an outpouring of sorrow using #RIPChristinaGrimmie.  Grimme was discovered on YouTube, where she gained a huge fan following.

After her show-stopping performance of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” during a blind audition captivated the attention of all four contestant judges Grimme went on to win a spot on Season 6 of “The Voice.” The rising star finished third in the overall contest but went on to share her voice with the world.

It’s unclear how the gunman got a gun into the venue or whether attendees were checked for weapons. At this time police have not named the suspect or given a motive for the shooting.
