Former Nebraska football star Lawrence Phillips was facing a murder charge in a California prison. Authorities at Kern Valley State Prison in Delano, Calif. said they found Phillips dead in his jail cell. They are investigating his death as a suspected suicide.

According to a release from the prison the prison staff was conducting security checks just after midnight Pacific time Wednesday, they found Phillips who was  40 years old unresponsive in his cell. They took Phillips to the hospital where he was pronounced dead about 90 minutes later.

Phillips played running back for Nebraska in the 1990’s and played in the NFL for three seasons for the Rams, Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers. He also played in the Canadian Football League as well.
