A Fayetteville city councilman said a stranger armed with a rifle and bullets walked into his church during a New Year’s Eve service. Before police arrived the unidentified man handed over the weapon and prayed with the pastor.

The Fayetteville Observer reported that about 11:40 p.m. the unidentified man entered Heal the Land Outreach Ministries as City Councilman Larry Wright was delivering his sermon.

Councilman Wright says the man was carrying the rifle in one hand, pointed up, and an ammunition clip in the other. Councilman Wright a 57-year-old retired soldier said when he asked the unidentified man if he needed help, the stranger who was calm began to crying and was invited to sit on the front pew.

No one was hurt or injured in the incident.
