That’s how many shots it took for two officers to bring down a man who had his back turned to them as he walked away in apparent defiance of their orders Saturday in the Lynwood area of Los Angeles, California, according to CBS Los Angeles.
The victim was identified as Nicholas Robertson, 28, at a news conference held by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on Sunday, reports ABC 7.
The incident began shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday when deputies received multiple 911 calls from Long Beach Boulevard and Magnolia Avenue about an armed man, writes ABC. Some callers alleged that he had fired a gun into the air.
From CBS Los Angeles:
“One deputy fired 17 and another deputy fired 16,” said Cpt. Steve Katz of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department about Saturday’s deputy-involved shooting.
The captain said it wasn’t necessarily unusual for a deputy to fire that many rounds.
“In this case, there was some grave concern for the number of victims that were in that location. The suspect presented a threat to the deputies and the community and they took the action that they did,” he said.
Needless to say, Twitter users, including Hollywood director Ava DuVernay, were outraged by the shooting.
Robertson passed away following the incident. If it’s true the victim had a gun, did it really take 33 bullets to stop him? And does law enforcement training teach officers to shoot men in the back even when they are on the ground?
