The head of North Carolina’s public university system is saying his good-byes to the oversight board that pushed him out and gave him a big raise to stay until his successor was found.  On Friday The University of North Carolina Board of Governors gathers for the last scheduled meeting before UNC system President Tom Ross steps down.

According to university system spokeswoman Joni Worthington, Ross steps down on Jan. 3 and someone yet to be named will do the job until March when former U.S. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings takes over.  Protests against Spellings, a close associate of former President George W. Bush, are planned before Friday’s meeting.

Ross headed the state’s 16 university campuses for four years.
