A 5-year-old boy from San Bernardino County who crawled through a smoke-filled hall to save his grandmother during a fire has been honored for heroism.  According to the San Bernardino Sun, Nathaniel Stocks who lives near Phelan, received a plaque Monday from county Fire Chief Mark Hartwig.

Fire officials say Saturday morning a space heater in the boy’s room started a blaze. Nathaniel woke up coughing from the smoke, got out of bed and crawled beneath the smoke level up a hallway to wake his sleeping grandmother.

They met firefighters outside the home. Firefighters then rescued the family’s Chihuahua and quickly doused the fire.

Authorities say Nathaniel and his school group had visited a fire station two days earlier, where he’d learned fire safety techniques including crawling under smoke.
