According to police Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone, who was hailed as a hero for helping tackle a gunman on a French train in August, was stabbed and seriously wounded outside a bar in his hometown early Thursday in an alcohol-related fight that had nothing to do with terrorism.  Authorities said 23 year old Stone was out with four friends when he was stabbed repeatedly in the upper body and as a result was taken to UC Davis Medical Center.

Authorities also said he was expected to pull through, however the two assailants responsible for the attack fled in a car and no arrests were made.  Deputy Police Chief Ken Bernard said the stabbing was “related to a nightclub incident” involving Stone’s group and another group of people.

Bernard wouldn’t say what caused the fight but he did say there was no evidence Stone’s assailants knew who he was.  According to the deputy chief it’s unknown whether Stone was drinking, but others in his group were.

President Barack Obama met with the three Americans (including Stone) that thwarted the possible terrorist attack last month, praising them for their quick thinking and courage and calling them “the very best of America.” President Francois Hollande also honored them France’s highest award.

The three heroes even appeared on late-night talk shows and received a hometown parade.
