Stephon Marbury is a popular former NBA player who’s also know for his line of affordable Starbury brand basketball shoes. Marbury’s line of $15 sneakers is his legacy.

In 2006 the ex-NBA guard launched his line which offered a low-cost option for people who didn’t want to pay most of a week’s paycheck on basketball shoes. The line flopped in 2009 as Marbury’s NBA career fizzled out, however as Marbury teased in an Instagram post in late September, the Chinese Basketball Association’s most visible player plans to revive Starburys sometime in the near future.

To promote the re-launch, Marbury’s been on the media circuit discussing the shoe’s quality and shaming other sneaker brands as obscenely overpriced.  His latest shot at the sneaker industry comes at one person in particular.

Marbury claims he’s disappointed in Michael Jordan and tired of kids getting killed over his brand of sneakers.  Over Twitter on Sunday night Marbury called Jordan out, labeling him a profiteer whose famous shoes have been “robbing the hood” of money as well as sparking violence for decades.

These are some interesting allegations from Marbury and a cynic might call Marbury calling out Jordan, the lowest form of free advertising and claiming the moral high ground to pump up his own product and wallet.

However someone less jaded would concede that basketball shoes are in fact getting ridiculously expensive and an inexpensive option that lightens a household’s financial burden is always a good thing to have.
