On Tuesday New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith was “sucker punched” by a teammate in the Jets locker room. As a result Smith now needs surgery and is out at least six to 10 weeks.
According to Jets head coach Todd Bowles, linebacker Ikemefuna Enemkpali who is also known as IK delivered the blow to Smith’s jaw. The Jets announced as a result, Enemkpali has been released from the team.
Bowles said “There was an altercation in the locker room. It had nothing to do with football. It was something very childish. He (Smith) got cold-cocked, sucker punched, whatever you want to call it, in the jaw. He has a broken jaw, fractured jaw, it requires some surgery.”
Bowles said that the team is dealing with the incident internally. A statement was released by Enemkpali through his agent in which, he apologized to the Jets’ coaches, players and fans.
The statement said “Geno and I let our frustration get the best of us, but I should have just walked away from the situation. I deeply regret and apologize for my actions.”
Since the incident Smith has taken to Instagram and posted that he will be back. In regards to why Enemkpali punched Smith, Bowles said the media would have to ask the players.
It’s unknown if Smith will press charges against Enemkpali. Bowles said he was not aware of a boiling issue between Smith and Enemkpali before the incident.
According to ESPN, Enemkpali had another physical altercation in college at Louisiana Tech, when he punched an off-duty police officer who was working security during a bar fight. Meanwhile, this incident has left the Jets in need of another quarterback.
Smith who was the strong pick at training camp was supposed to be the starter. Now, Ryan Fitzpatrick will be the next likely pick.
Tuesday Bowles said they may or may not add another quarterback to the roster, however Smith won’t be playing this weekend or during the preseason.
