According to authorities, 3a.m. Sunday morning there was a head-on collision on Interstate 85 in Orange County and as a result three people were killed.  The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said 20 year old Chandler Michael Kania of Asheboro, was driving north in the southbound lanes when his Jeep Wrangler collided with a Suzuki driven by 49 year old Felecia Harris of Charlotte.

Harris as well as two of her three passengers was killed. One of the other two victims was a 6-year-old named Janiece Smith, from Brooklyn, N.Y. and the third victim has not yet been identified.  A second child seated in the back of Harris’ vehicle was rushed to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. The child was seriously injured and was still being treated as of Sunday night.

Kania, who was a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, also was taken to UNC Hospitals for treatment on non-life-threatening injuries.  Troopers confirmed that alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash however no charges have been filed.

Harris’s Facebook profile says that she was a part-time instructor at UNC-Charlotte.  For several hours the crash shutdown two southbound lanes near mile marker 163 while the Highway Patrol investigated and cleared the wreckage.
