Both supporters of the Loyal White Knights of the KKK and the New Black Panther Party held rallies on the statehouse grounds on Saturday.  Supporters of the KKK rally gathered in support of the Confederate flag which was removed from outside the Capitol building a week and a day ago.

The groups clashed outside the South Carolina Capitol in Columbia.  According to CNN affiliate WOLO one KKK member commented:

“The Confederate flag does not represent hate. A lot of Americans died for that flag.”

As the day went on, tensions did nothing but grow between supporters and non-supporters.  According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety there were five arrests and ambulances transported seven people for medical treatment.

In spite of the fact that state police placed themselves between the opposing sides, scuffles still erupted. Tensions reached a boiling point when a group of people grabbed a Confederate flag and started ripping it apart.

The rally was shut down an hour early by authorities to disperse the crowd they estimated at 2,000 people.
