According to Mayor Betty Wallace, Sunday evening a male and female teenager was bit by sharks off Oak Island. The 12-year-old girl was bitten near the Ocean Crest Pier at about 4:15 p.m. and the attack on the boy happened two miles to the east about an hour later.

Both teens were bitten on the left arm and both had to have part of that arm amputated. Mayor Wallace said the girl may also lose her left leg.  As of Monday morning both teens were listed in good condition and were being treated in the Intensive Care Unit at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Sunday’s incidents occurred just miles up the coast from Ocean Isle Beach, where a 13 year old girl was bit by a shark on Thursday evening.  In that particular incident that teen suffered lacerations on her right foot, but was not severely injured.

According to officials, the beach will be open Monday, and swimmers will be allowed in the water. Since there are no lifeguards along Oak Island beaches Town Manager Tim Holloman said town and county authorities would be patrolling the coastline in helicopters to keep an eye out for sharks.

Holloman said “Oak Island is still a safe place. This is highly unusual.”A news conference is scheduled for Monday morning at 9 a.m. at the Oak Island Town Hall.
