Free Taco Bell

Taco Bell and Pizza Hut are the latest big food companies saying they’re getting rid of the artificial colors and flavors in their food.  According to Liz Mathews, Taco Bell’s food innovation officer an example an example of the changes that are going to be made are instead of using “black pepper flavor” Taco Bell will start using actual black pepper in their beef.

Other ingredients that are being removed are the artificial dye Yellow No. 6 from its nacho cheese, Blue No. 1 will be removed from its avocado ranch dressing and carmine, a bright pigment, will be removed from its red tortilla strips.

The change was prompted by the pressure that smaller food chains are putting on their bigger opponents by claiming to be more wholesome alternatives (such as Chipotle)., Professor of food science at Penn State University, John Coupland said he feels that companies are realizing some ingredients aren’t worth the potential harm they might cause to their images, given changing attitudes about additives.

Yum Brands Inc. owns Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and Kentucky Fried Chicken.  The company hinted toward changes late last year, however representatives at KFC have not commented on whether or not the chain will also be removing artificial ingredients.

Other food companies that are following the trend are Panera, McDonald’s and Subway.
