Protests in Baltimore over Freddie Gray

A grand jury has made the decision to indict all six officers charged in the case of Freddie Gray, the young man who died of injuries he obtained while in police custody. Prosecutors have been presenting evidence to the grand jury for the past two weeks.

However the indictments that was announced Thursday share a similarities with the charges that Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby announced nearly three weeks ago.  The charges range from second-degree “depraved heart” murder to assault.

Officers Edward Nero and Garrett Miller, were indicted on second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office for “failure to perform a duty regarding the safety of a prisoner” and for an illegal arrest. The charges stem from April 12th when police shackled and placed Gray head-first into a van and ignored his repeated pleas for medical attention.

As a result Gray, Gray passed away from a critical spinal injury and a week after his death protests (some of which turned into riots within Baltimore) took place throughout the nation. Gray’s death reiterates what protesters have been saying about a pattern of police brutality against African-Americans in Baltimore.

Attorneys for the officers have said in court documents they feel that they are the victims of an “overzealous prosecution” riddled with personal and political conflicts of interest.  The idea that Mosby should be replaced with an independent prosecutor has been expressed by the officer’s attorney as well since her husband is a city councilman who represents the areas most impacted by turmoil.

Thursday was the same day the neighbors of Freddie Gray received the news as well and rather than cheering some of the people of the community seem to be holding their praises for a conviction instead of just an indictment.
