An Amtrak train abruptly overturned in Philadelphia. The incident resulted in six deaths and over a dozen injuries. Many of the passengers on board sustained their injuries by attempting to escape through the windows of toppled cars.
Amtrak said the cause of the derailment was not known and that it was working to find out. Due to the accident, the nation’s busiest rail corridor between New York and Washington has been shut down until federal investigators can find out what caused the accident. The National Transportation Safety Board also said it was launching an investigation, and will have a unit at the site by Wednesday morning.
So far all we know about the incident is that, train 188 left Washington, D.C. with 238 passengers and five crew members and was headed to New York when it derailed a little after 9 p.m. It seems that the front of the train was going into a turn when it started to shake before coming to a sudden stop.
Mayor Michael Nutter gave his opinion on the accident in which he said “It is an absolute disastrous mess.I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. We walked the entire length of the train area, and the engine completely separated from the rest of the train, and one of the cars is perpendicular to the rest of the cars. It’s unbelievable.”
