An emotional reunion between a St. Louis woman and her 50-year-old daughter whom she thought died at birth has prompted other moms to question the fate of their newborns who allegedly died at the same hospital decades ago, reports CNN.

Last month, Zella Jackson Price, 76, reunited with her daughter Melanie Diane Gilmore after Gilmore’s children tracked down Price to celebrate their mother’s 50th birthday, the report says.

Price was told that her newborn baby girl had died after giving birth to Gilmore in 1965 at Homer G. Phillips Hospital in St. Louis. So she was surprised to learn that Gilmore, told by her adoptive parents that her mother had given her up, was alive.

Other women have come forward with similar stories after giving birth in the 1950s and 1960s at the now closed-hospital that served the city’s Black community.

St. Louis attorney Albert Watkins, who represents Price and two other families with stories about lost babies at Homer G. Phillips Hospital, asked Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon and St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay this week for help investigating their cases.

He says more than 20 elderly black women have come forward.

“Not only are their stories and the protocols consistent,” Watkins said on Friday, but “each and every one of them were told that their babies had died, and not one of them can find a death certificate.”

Watkins has asked Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon and St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay this week for help investigating their cases.

We wish luck to everyone involved in this horrible tragedy and pray that mothers can be reunited with their lost children.
