Valentine’s weekend at the multiplex will be Grey vs. Clay. Exploitation vs. innocence. “Unusual behavior” (why the MPAA’s rated “Fifty Shades” R) vs. thoughtful behavior. Old Fashioned, aimed squarely at “Fifty Shades of Grey,” hopes to influence the outcome.

“This Valentine’s Day,” says the trailer, “leave the door open to two souls who take the time to discover not manipulation but healing.”  “Sexy corporate mogul” appears onscreen and a red line strikes through the words. Scenes then contrast the opposing stories: fantasy wealth and a contract to inflict pain  . . . or two down-to-earth, relatable people with failed romances, now finding their way to real love. That was the trailer, so I thought the movie had promise.

Synopsis:

A romantic-drama, Old Fashioned centers on Clay Walsh, a former frat boy who gives up his reckless carousing and now runs an antique shop in a small Midwestern college town. There, he has become notorious for his lofty and outdated theories on love and romance as well as for his devout belief in God. When Amber Hewson, a free-spirited young woman with a restless soul, drifts into the area and rents the apartment above his shop, she finds herself surprisingly drawn to his strong faith and noble ideas, which are new and intriguing to her. And Clay, though he tries to fight and deny it, simply cannot resist being attracted to her spontaneous and passionate embrace of life. Ultimately, Clay must step out from behind his relational theories and Amber must overcome her own fears and deep wounds as the two of them, together, attempt the impossible: an “old-fashioned” and God-honoring courtship in contemporary America.

Review:

I loved it.  No swearing, but mature conversation. It does not shy away from the topical of dealing with intimacy. You can go and watch and not feel bereft of any emotion when you are done. The supporting cast  gives you a great sense of puzzlement as they watch the couple step outside what is considered normal dating,  There  are two sub stories that are realistic commentaries on couples living together and the ‘shock jock’ playboy. The leading man,  Clay is definitely the choice of man you would want your daughter to date. I suggest you take your high school boys and girls to see this movie. The boys can appreciate the view from Clay’s point. The girls will be pleasantly refreshed as they see a young woman who has fallen start over.  It is definitely worth seeing and I highly recommend it as date movie.  It is the date movie that young couples can see and start their conversation with. It is not preachy nor heavy handed in content. It simply tells a great story with human gentleness.

Content Warning:

There is no swearing. There are a few moments of sexual intimacy implied but no nudity. One scene  concerns the arrival of a stripper.

Check your local theaters for tis true Valentine’s Day card in the form of a movie!
