The parents of a School 16 Troy, New York, elementary school student are alleging that their son’s teacher forced him to lick his desk after he drew on it.

George (pictured left) and Latonia (pictured) Spencer told News Center the incident happened after the teacher caught their son doodling on his desk. As punishment, she ordered him to clean up the marks with his tongue.
According to published reports, the student was forced to keep licking the desk until he began to gag, at which point the teacher had him get paper towels and wipe it off. The incident reportedly occurred in February.
“We are constantly on our children, Listen to the teacher. Do what the teacher says,” Latonia said. “We never thought we’d have to say, Don’t lick the desk if the teacher tells you to lick the desk.”

While the Spencers succeeded in having their son placed in another class, they say his old teacher told his friends not to speak with him, effectively alienating him from his peers. The Spencers have come forward because they believe the district has done little to address the situation. According to the parents, the boy’s old teacher was never disciplined nor did the teacher offer an apology.
News Center placed calls to the Troy School District, and they received a statement from Interim Superintendent of School Brian Howard in response, saying the case has been resolved:
When a complaint from a parent is received the matter is investigated. Once the facts are known, appropriate steps are taken. If the facts show a complaint is unfounded the parent is informed. If the facts show a complaint is accurate or partially accurate, corrective measures are taken and the parent is informed.
Information regarding a specific student, staff member or parent is confidential and cannot be shared. There are times when a parent may not want to accept the facts. There are times when a parent may not agree that the steps taken are appropriate. The District will only act on the facts. The District is bound by laws and regulations.
