The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board held a public hearing Wednesday night on major redistricting plans scheduled for next year.

The move could impact up to 1,300 of the system’s 12,000 students. About 60 people signed up to speak at a public hearing, most were concerned about the four redistricting proposals for Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools next year.

School leaders say the biggest reason for redistricting is to fill the new Northside Elementary, scheduled to open in August. Leaders say the redistricting plans will also alleviate overcrowding at schools throughout the district. However many parents say the plans send their students farther from home.
