Scotland County has struggled especially hard during these past few years of economic recession.

June unemployment numbers show the county continues to shoulder the state’s highest unemployment rate. During July the rate came in at 17.6 percent.

“It’s been kind of rough, we’ve been managing. I had been working for 20 some plus more years and this is the first time I’ve ever been laid off,” said job seeker Flint Corner.

Corner has recently taken advantage of a federal program to help him go back to school for welding. County Manager Kevin Patterson said Scotland County has been fighting the same battle many former industrial counties face across the country.
