The North Carolina Central University Police Department has received multiple reports of a check fraud scam on campus. Campus police have identified a suspect who has been targeting victims as they walk on or near the campus, but no arrest has been made yet.

The woman suspect has been reported to be flagging down her victims and telling them how she cannot cash her check. She says she is in desperate need of money for her baby and will pay to have her check cashed. The woman then asks students to deposit a check ranging from $200 to $500 into their account at the Wells Fargo ATM on George Street. The suspect accompanies the victim to the ATM machine and, once the check is deposited into the victim’s account, the victim gives the suspect the amount of the check minus $20, according to a report from the University police.
