Hundreds of people who live in the Friendly Avenue-Hobbs Road area in Greensboro are pooling their efforts to stop a proposed shopping center from coming to their neighborhood. About 300 of them showed up at a meeting Sunday night forming the Friendly Coalition against the shopping center that could include a Trader Joe’s grocery store.

They’re upset because they say the stores would back into their property lines. The group wants Trader Joe’s to come to the Gate City, just in a different location.

“Take your development somewhere else,” said Mark O’Connor, co-chair of the Friendly Coalition. “We have plenty of shopping here already. We already have two grocery stores, and 100 shops at Friendly Center. How much more shopping do we need?”

Greensboro Zoning Commission leaders also add that Regency Centers development leaders have had limited contact with them about the proposed plan.
