An outspoken leader and courageous civil right activist that many may not have known much about, has passed away.

The Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth was a co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership conference and was recognized by Rev. Martin Luther King for his courage and dedication.

Shuttlesworth died Wednesday morning at a Birmingham, Alabama hospital, he was 89.

Shuttlesworth was a former truck driver who studies religion at night and became Pastor of Bethel Baptist in Birmingham, Ala.  He soon became an outspoken leader in the fight for racial equality.
