On this Good Friday, while many are getting ready to celebrate Easter, some are preparing to serve others. The Durham Rescue Mission will hold its annual Easter Community Dinner.

Volunteers fired up the grill around 10 p.m. Thursday. The free community meal will feature barbecue and all the trimmings. Volunteers also organized an Easter basket giveaway for kids 12 and under.

Participants can also enjoy carnival games with lots of free prizes.

And as with many of the rescue mission’s events, there will be free clothing items and food bags for those who need them. Last year, about 450 pounds of barbecue, 2,000 hot dogs and 800 Easter baskets were given away.

So far, about 175 volunteers have signed up to help. The meal begins at noon at the Durham Rescue Mission on East Main Street in Durham. The line will begin forming early.
