The work at home mom vs. the corporate mom is a tough decision. All moms work whether they have an outside job or not. Whether you stay home with your children depends on a number of factors. Here are the things you should consider when deciding whether or not to be a work at home mom or corporate mom.
1. Evaluate your child care situation. Daycare centers can be big, expensive, and impersonal, but not all child care facilities are created equal. The bottom line is if you are spending ½ your check in daycare expenses, then working at home is a much easier option and will save you greatly in the end. This was a decision I made 7 years ago. I had a 10 month old and a 18 month old and my entire check would have went to daycare. It made more sense to work from home and care for my own children knowing they were safe and properly cared for and I was able to provide financially by replacing my corporate income.
2. While working full-time might be too much for both you and your young child, consider looking for a home business that will allow you to spend time with your family without sacrificing the income. Children tend to be well rounded and appreciate a parent being available to them at all times. They feel more secure and their esteem tends to increase. I am available for field trips and awards ceremonies any given time because I control my schedule and my income.
3. If you are irritable and miserable as a mom whom works outside the home, then working at home may be a better choice for you. If you are the primary wage earner, you can find a successful business to replace your income. You can easily start out part time until your income is replaced by your business from home.
4. If you’ve evaluated the relative benefits of being a work at home mom vs. a corporate mom and you’re stuck in one or the other position, don’t despair. If your goal is to stay home, invest some time learning how you can cut your expenses or build up residual income. If you are staying home with a young child but feel frustrated, realize that it’s temporary and enjoy your child while they are little. Your kids will be all grown up in the blink of an eye, we as moms should enjoy them while we can.
