About 11,000 Durham residents could find themselves paying higher water bills due to mistakes made by a recently fired water meter reader. Officials with the city say an employee wasn’t reading the meters correctly and was estimating or just making up some numbers. Affected Durham residents said they were shocked by their water bills. Residents will receive a letter explaining the billing cycles between September 2009 and February 2010. The employee has since been fired, and now some customers may receive a catch-up bill if they were under billed.
