Prior to the 1960 “sit-in” in Greensboro, there was the 1957 “sit-in” in Durham. Led by Rev. Douglas Moore, seven men and women walked into the door of Royal Ice Cream and sat down in the booths reserved exclusively for white people. After refusing to move, they were arrested and fined $10 plus court costs. So in remembrance of that event more than 100 people turned out Sunday to help dedicate a state highway that also commemorates that sit-in, which sparked similar actions across the south.
