Yesterday the Wake Couty Board of Education voted to end the diversity policy in student assignment in schools. In a 5-4vote the board voted in favor of allowing students to go to schools closer to their homes, regardlss of the socio-economic makeup of the student body. The diversity policy ensured that no more than 40% of students recieving free or reduced lunches were assigned to a particular school. A very vocal Jon Tedesco joined board Chairman Ron Margoitta, Deborah Prickett, Chris Malone and Debra Goldman in voting in favor of the change, while McLaurin, Keith Sutton, Kevin Hill and Carolyn Morrison voted against. Rev. William Barber, held an impromptu rally for those against the resolution immediately after the meeting. Barber has also threatened to sue the board if it moves away from the diversity policy, fearing research that says schools will large majorities of poor children fail. A second and final vote will be taken at the next school board meeting.
