What began as a single tractor trailer accident this morning, ended up being 5 accidents that sent four to the hospital and backup traffic for miles between Raleigh and Cary.  Sgt. Jorge Brewer of the state Highway Patrol, said that the first, chain-reaction started with a two-vehicle collision near exit 284 to Airport Boulevard around 8:45 a.m. Traffic began backing up because of that accident  when a tractor-trailer rear ended two other vehicles (Honda & Saturn) near exit 287 to Harrison Ave. The Saturn spun and struck another vehicle which collided with two more.

Reports say that two drivers were transported to Rex Hospital, one to Duke University Hospital, and one to WakeMed.

Authorities have not released their names or conditions.

The highway was shut down for about two hours, and at one point, westbound traffic was backed up for about eight miles, past the U.S. 1/64 interchange to Gorman Street in Raleigh.
