A Pennsylvania woman who fell into a fountain while texting, now says she’s thinking of suing the shopping mall where it was happened…. But now after allegations of theft, she’s rethinking her actions.

The video of her tripping into the fountain has gone viral on YouTube has been viewed a million and a half times.

Now, a security guard has been fired for posting the security camera footage on the web and the woman in the video, Cathy Cruz Marrero, has hired a lawyer to explore whether security should have come to her aid.
“Nobody took my feelings into consideration. I’m sorry, nobody. Nobody called, are you OK? It shows in the video, nobody went to my aid. Not one single person went to my aid,” says Cruz Marrero.

Marrero, who works in the mall, says she was texting a friend and just didn’t see where she was going.

Now listen to what Good Morning America has found out:

The inattentive woman was caught on CCTV by security guards walking in a straight line with all her attention on sending a text message. She is seemingly oblivious to her surroundings and even more oblivious to what lies waiting right in front of her.

The unknown woman is seen walking in a straight line towards an unheated mall fountain in the US. The video shows the woman plunging unceremoniously into the water before embarrassingly clambering out the fountain to continue her text messaging.

The video was posted with commentary by what is believed to be either security guards or mall employees who watched the video repeatedly, reports Mail Online.

About 72 percent of adult mobile phone users send text messages with their phones, according to a report released Thursday from the Pew Research Center. That’s up from 65 percent just a year ago. About 87 percent of teenagers use their phones to tap out messages to each other, the survey said. And they’re way busier. Teens send an average of 50 text messages a day, five times more than the 10 that adults send daily.

“Texting among adults has reached the mainstream … ,” said Amanda Lenhart, a senior research specialist at the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project and the author the report. “Of course, none of these adult groups hold a candle to teens when it comes to texting, who swamp adults in messages sent per day by a factor of five.”
But while they’re texting more, Americans still have mixed feelings about mobile phones. In a nutshell: They like their own, but they hate yours.

Almost all mobile phone users, 91 percent, say having the phone makes them feel safer, and 88 percent say they like how the phone helps them make plans with family and friends. But nearly as many, 86 percent, say they think it’s rude when other people repeatedly check their phones during meetings or conversations.

Many of us are probably guilty of talking on our cell phones or texting while being behind the wheel. Did you know that talking on the cell phone is now equal to drunk driving, and when you add texting to that equation it only increases the likely hood of disaster.
Many of us are probably guilty of talking on our cell phones or texting while being behind the wheel. Did you know that talking on the cell phone is now equal to drunk driving, and when you add texting to that equation it only increases the likely hood of disaster. Sure we all know it can be dangerous but perhaps we’ve never been directly affected by the traumatic effects that this action can cause. So we risk it anyway. Maybe we just don’t know the exact numbers, such as distracted driving kills 6,000 people a year and injures another 500,000. Looking at it from that angle it seems beyond stupid to risk losing your life just to respond to a text when someone ask you nothing more than “what are you doing?”

“The Oprah Winfrey Show” just held this as a platform to create and build awareness. Oprah invited drivers to observe a national “No Phone Zone Day” today and to make every car a “No Phone Zone.” Winfrey plan was to devote her show to raising awareness about the widespread problem, and communities from around the country will be held live viewing events that include Atlanta, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles and Washington.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told ABC News he’s “proud” to participate in Winfrey’s initiative. “We know that if we can get people to put away cell phones and other electronic devices when they are behind the wheel, we can save thousands of lives and prevent hundreds and thousands of injuries every year,” LaHood said in a statement. Drivers who talk or text have much slower response times than those who don’t, and they have slower reaction times than drivers whose blood-alcohol levels are 0.06, studies show.

“My biggest hope for the No Phone Zone campaign is that it becomes mandatory that no one uses their phone in the car or texts while driving — just as seat belts are mandatory, just as driving while drunk is considered absolutely taboo,” Ms. Winfrey said in a statement. “I’m hoping that this becomes not just law, but second nature for all of us. I think that this is a great campaign but do you think that it can really work and how many of you are prepared to adapt your personal habits in the name of personal safety?
