The researchers found that black women are more likely to be concerned about possible physical limitations caused by overweight and obesity, rather than the potential psychological consequences.

In the study, investigators analyzed data collected between 2000 and 2010 from 172 black and 171 white obese women. The women filled out a questionnaire that examined five quality-of-life areas: physical function, self-esteem, sexual life, public distress and work.

Among all the women, quality-of-life fell as body mass index (BMI) rose. BMI is a measurement of overweight and obesity. However, at similar BMIs, black women consistently had higher quality-of-life scores than white women and self-esteem was particularly high among black women, according to Tiffany Cox, of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and colleagues.

Dr. Mwata Dyson, a health care consultant based in New York City adds, “The biggest health care crisis we are facing as a community is the crisis of obesity. We are behind the eight ball.”

Beyonce plans to remix one of her songs for middle school age students to perform a pre-choreographed dance exercise on May 3 at 1:42pm.  The video will be available for all interested middle schools across the country.

To help combat such negative trends, consider this excerpt from the new book “The Real Cost of Living: Making the Best Choices for You, Your Life, and Your Money” by personal finance expert Carmen Wong Ulrich:

Resolution #1: Lose weight
Obesity is becoming the norm in this country — a very dangerous and expensive norm. We’re being super-sized at such a rate that experts say that in 20 years, more than half of American adults and the majority of children will be overweight. The first and possibly most expensive costs of obesity have to do with direct and indirect health-care costs and complications. Being overweight can contribute to many diseases and chronic conditions, including some cancers (breast and colon), diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, high cholesterol and stroke, and this list contains four of the top six causes of death in the United States. As of 2008, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that health-care costs in this country were around $147 billion to cover health complications from obesity — more than 9 percent of the nation’s annual health-care budget. If you break down that price tag, obese Americans pay $1,429 a year more in medical costs than someone who has a body mass index (BMI) below 25; that’s 42 percent higher health-care costs for an individual. If you’re overweight or obese, you’re also much more likely to take more medication than someone of lower BMI.

Your paycheck also pays the price. Wage discrimination exists as well as hiring discrimination. The majority of respondents in one recent study said that they’d always choose the thinner individual when deciding between two similar job applicants. Employees who are overweight, on average, make $1.25 an hour less than a low-BMI colleague, adding up to a six-figure loss over a career. Women get hit the hardest when it comes to paying a high price at work for being overweight — obese women can make up to 24 percent less than an average-size women while even slightly overweight women make around 6 percent less.

Obesity price tag: $6,454

Add together the higher annual costs of health care and medication ($1,429), wage discrimination ($2,500), travel costs (a conservative $25), and other lifestyle costs such as mobility and clothing ($2,500), and the cost of being overweight is around $6,454 a year, or $538 a month. Over a lifetime (40 adult years), that’s more than $258,000. And had you instead put that $538 a month in your retirement account, earning a moderate average of 6 percent interest, you’d have $1,082,675. But that’s without diabetes or complications. Consider those pricey add-ons, and you’re looking at $19,454 a year in total costs — that’s $778,160 over a lifetime and over $3 million if that money had been invested.

Alabama — Politics Daily is reporting that former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is defending Michelle Obama in her “food fight” with Sarah Palin, who says the first lady needs to mind her business.

Huckabee knows a thing or two about obesity. Huckabee, who lost more than 100 pounds after learning in 2003 that he had diabetes, says fellow Republican Sarah Palin maybe doesn’t get it when it comes to First Lady Michelle Obama’s campaign against childhood obesity. Huckabee, a once and possibly future presidential candidate, told New York radio host Curtis Sliwa that Obama is on to something important.

Washington — On her reality show, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” former Governor of Alaska and GOP candidate for Vice President, Sarah Palin mocked Michelle Obama’s anti-child obesity campaign.

“Where are the s’mores ingredients? This is in honor of Michelle Obama, who said the other day we should not have dessert.”

Michelle Obama has never said that Americans should not eat dessert, but she did say that dessert is a right and not a privilege and also complained that in America dessert is practically a food group.

Sarah Palin took a shot at Michelle Obama during Sunday’s episode of her reality TV show, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” alleging the first lady’s anti-obesity campaign attempts to deprive Americans of dessert.

While searching for s’mores ingredients on a family camping trip, Palin remarked: “Where are the s’mores ingredients? This is in honor of Michelle Obama, who said the other day we should not have dessert.”

Mrs. Obama has been a key proponent of an initiative to improve children’s health by encouraging better diets and sufficient exercise. In May she announced her “Let’s Move” program, which promoted dessert alternatives, among other dietary suggestions.

One in 3 American children is overweight or obese, putting them at higher risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other illnesses. Obesity is even more prevalent among black and Hispanic children. Some public health experts say today’s children are on track to live shorter lives than their parents.

But Palin has maintained that Obama’s effort to combat child obesity — which was recently aided by the passage of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act — is one that seeks to take away “God-given rights to make our own decisions.”

During an appearance on Laura Ingraham’s radio program last month, Palin complained: “Instead of a government thinking that they need to take over and make decisions for us according to some politician or politician’s wife priorities, just leave us alone, get off our back.”

I think we have all long known what John Gray put down in words in his bestseller, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus: There are differences between the sexes, not just physically, but psychologically. And a new study being published in the May issue of Personality Individual Differences reinforces that belief.

Researchers at Brigham Young University set out to gauge hidden feelings about body image. They conducted psychological screenings of both men and women using brain imaging technology. MRI scans were employed to monitor the brain activity of the participants while they were shown computer-generated images of different body types. While viewing each image, the participants were asked to imagine that someone else was saying the model looked like them.

Not surprisingly, the images of overweight women triggered the self-reflection and identity processing area in the brain in only the female participants. The medial prefrontal cortex lit up in not just a few, but all of the women. Mark Allen, a neuroscientist at BYU said, “This is kind of validating the suspicion that most women are teetering on the edge of an eating disorder. If the brain response is so strong in these apparently healthy women, maybe most of us could use a little dose of what it is that you go through in an eating disorder therapy.”
