Pastor Marvin Winans Will Deliver The Eulogy For Whitney Houston On Saturday

Whitney Houston’s funeral service will be private and will be held Saturday in the New Jersey church where she attended as a child. There will not be a public service but the private service may be broadcast for fans.

The owner of the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark said that Houston’s funeral would be held at noon Saturday at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, and there would be no wake.

The 48-year-old Houston died Feb. 11 at a hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. Officials say she was underwater and apparently unconscious when she was pulled from a bathtub.

After an autopsy Sunday, authorities said there were no indications of foul play and no obvious signs of trauma on Houston. It could be weeks, however, before the coroner’s office completes toxicology tests to establish the cause of death.

BOONTON, N.J-Kashif Parvaiz admitted to orchestrating the killing of his wife, Nazish Noorani, with his mistress, Antoinette Stephen.

Noorani and Parvaiz were both shot in the Boonton, New Jersey but police began to suspect he was involved after they discovered flaws in his story. Parvais’s original story had police suspicious of a hate crime after he claimed three Black men shot him and his wife while yelling “terrorists.”

The Bend Bulletin reports:

Parvaiz, according to prosecutors, initially described a trio of attackers: one white, one black and one whose race he said he could not determine. He later changed his story, describing all three as black, before finally admitting to setting up the shooting, according to his arrest affidavit.

Newark Teen Charged With Murder Of Off-Duty Police Officer

NEWARK, N.J. — 19-year-old Rasul McNeil-Thomas was charged with murder yesterday for killing an off-duty police officer in a drive-by shooting.

The Westward Patch reports:

William C. Johnson, 45, a 16-year veteran of the Newark Police Department, who was assigned to the communications division, was unarmed and not working when he was shot shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday night at Texas Fried Chicken and Pizza on Lyons Avenue in the city’s South Ward, according to officials. He was pronounced dead at 3:10 a.m. Friday at University Hospital.

Rasul McNeil-Thomas also was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and additional weapons offenses for the shooting of two other victims during the incident, authorities said. Officials said a second suspect is still at-large.

A vigil is planned for Johnson Tuesday night, 6 p.m., at the restaurant’s intersection, according to a spokesman with the Newark Anti-Violence Coalition.

New Jersey — Reuters is reporting on a new law proposed by New Jersey lawmakers that intends to curb steroid use by police officers and firefighters:

Law enforcement steroid use is a problem around the country and, given that steroid use can cause aggression, can invite problems for police, said Larry Gaines, chairman of the Department of Criminal Justice at California State University in San Bernadino, California.

“Aggression is not very common but nonetheless it’s a possible problem,” Gaines said. “If it does occur, you could see lawsuits against police departments regarding citizens injured from steroid rage.”

The New Jersey measures come in response to reports last month of a local doctor who illegally supplied hundreds of police and firefighters with anabolic steroids, human growth hormones and other muscle-building drugs.

New Jersey — Two men, Canpolat Cankurt and Leonardo Quintero are accused of raping a 12-year-old girl who they met on the internet and video recording it with a cell phone camera. North Jersey reports:

Quintero and Cankurt are accused of picking up the 12-year-old at her home in Paterson at 2 a.m. Friday, coercing her inside a Clifton apartment and taking her to the basement where they forced her to drink alcoholic beverages and raped her. Cankurt videotaped the sexual assaults, police said.

Police believe Quintero met the Paterson fourth-grader online through her instant messaging account. He chatted on the Iinternet with her for a few weeks and then called her Thursday through early Friday morning. He allegedly convinced her to leave home at 2 a.m. Friday without telling her family, drove to her home and picked her up.

New Jersey — Camden, New Jersey, America’s 2nd most violent city, has layed off half of its police force according to the Huffington Post:

New Jersey’s most violent city approved layoffs for half its police force on Thursday.

The Camden City Council unanimously voted to layoff a quarter of the city’s government workers, including half of its police officers.

Newark hit the jackpot with a $100 million donation from the Facebook founder to aid its ailing schools. Now the country will be watching for results—and mistakes.

Mark Zuckerberg and Cory Booker want to show you how to fix your school district. The Facebook CEO and the Mayor of New Jersey’s largest city have heard the troubling statistics about America’s failing schools. They know about the math and science test scores that trail other countries, the racial achievement gaps, and the low graduation rates. Newark, Booker’s city, has these problems and more. Only about half its students receive a high-school diploma. A large proportion of students who do get one will still need remedial classes in college.

Zuckerberg and Booker believe they can turn the tide. They have a head start thanks to Zuckerberg’s $100 million donation to the city’s schools, announced in September, and support from Gov. Chris Christie, whose administration calls the shots in Newark’s state-controlled school district. Now, if only Newark citizens will get on board.

Money alone won’t solve Newark’s problems. It already spends about $20,000 per student, more than twice the national average. And when education reformers like former Washington, D.C., superintendent Michelle Rhee made radical changes, a public backlash undermined their efforts.

What Zuckerberg and Booker don’t have, at least for the moment, is the one ingredient they know is essential: the support of thousands of the city’s residents who buy into a long-term reform agenda with their votes, their voices, and their time. Rhee faced community meetings full of angry teachers and parents opposing her decisions. Newark’s reformers are trying to turn out hundreds of angry parents and teachers supporting the changes on the table. If they succeed, the growing line of hedge-fund philanthropists and wealthy private foundations taking an interest in America’s schools may well follow their lead.

Seton Hall Shooting: Police Capture Second Man

Police arrested the man they say provided the gun that killed one person and injure several others at an off-campus party attended by students from Seton Hall University in New Jersey.

Marcus Bascus, who was arrested 75 miles away from the scene of the murder in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., lives a block away from where the shooting occurred.

Bascus, like alleged shooter Nicholas Welch (pictured above), 25, faces murder, conspiracy, attempted murder and weapons charges.

Welch, who was arrested earlier this week, has proclaimed his innocence. He pleaded not guilty. He also agreed to submit to a DNA test. His lawyer asked that he remain in protective custody at the Essex County jail.

Killed in the shooting was 19-year-old Seton Hall honor student Jessica Moore. Police say Moore sustained a bullet to the head as she was tending to a friend who had been shot in the jaw.

Suspected Al-Qaeda New Jersey Man Accused Of Killing Guard In Yemen

BUENA, N.J. – Sharif Mobley had strong Muslim views as early as high school. But his old friend Roman Castro knew he had radicalized when he saw him about four years ago.

Castro, an Army veteran who did a tour in Iraq, said Mobley had only these words for him in a chance meeting: “Get the hell away from me, you Muslim killer!”

Now, Mobley is in custody in Yemen as a suspected member of the same branch of al-Qaida that’s linked to the failed Christmas Day bombing attempt of a Detroit-bound jet, and stands accused of killing a guard in an attempt to break out of a hospital, officials said Thursday.

Mobley, a former laborer at several nuclear power plants in the U.S., appears to be the latest example of the phenomenon of Americans joining terror movements overseas, which U.S. intelligence officials have warned of.

His case surfaces days after charges of terrorist connections were brought against Colleen LaRose, an American-born woman known as “Jihad Jane” who lived for years in Pennsylvania.

Mobley, a 26-year-old natural-born U.S. citizen, was identified by Yemeni officials as a Somali-American. A former neighbor said he moved to Yemen about two years ago, supposedly to learn Arabic and study Islam.

He was among 11 al-Qaida suspects detained this month in a security sweep in Yemen’s capital of San’a this month. He was taken to the hospital over the weekend after he complained of feeling ill. He snatched a gun from a security guard and fatally shot one guard and wounded another before being captured, said Mohammed Albasha, spokesman for the Yemeni Embassy in Washington.

In Yemen, killing a guard during an escape attempt could result in execution by a firing squad.

U.S. officials fear that Yemen is becoming the next significant terrorist staging ground because of signs that lower-level al-Qaida operatives have been moving into the country, and the Pentagon has proposed spending $150 million to help Yemen battle insurgents.

The al-Qaida branch in Yemen was linked to the failed Christmas Day airliner bombing attempt. And Maj. Nidal Hasan, the Army psychiatrist accused of killing 13 people in a shooting rampage at Fort Hood last year, had exchanged e-mails with an extremist cleric in Yemen.

Americans are valuable to terrorist groups, in part because they can travel without arousing much suspicion.

“The U.S. passport is the gold standard,” said Fred Burton, a former U.S. counterintelligence agent who is now a vice president at STRATFOR, a global intelligence company in Austin, Texas.

Mobley graduated from high school in 2002 in the rural southern New Jersey town of Buena, and later lived in Philadelphia and Newark, Del. Castro said that in the past few years, Mobley organized religious pilgrimages to the Middle East for other Muslims.

Mobley’s mother, Cynthia Mobley, told WMGM-TV in Atlantic City, N.J., that her son is “an excellent person who’s never been in trouble” and “a good Muslim.”

As his father, Charles Mobley, pulled out of the family’s driveway on the way to see a lawyer Thursday, he said, “I can tell you this: He’s no terrorist.”

Mobley worked for several contractors at three nuclear power plants in New Jersey from 2002 to 2008, PSE&G Nuclear spokesman Joe Delmar said. Mobley carried supplies and did maintenance work at the plants on Artificial Island in Lower Alloways Creek, and worked at other plants in the region as well.

He satisfied federal background checks as recently as 2008, Delmar said, adding that PSE&G is cooperating with authorities.

Mike Drewniak, a spokesman for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, said that his office had been told that Mobley was always supervised, caused no problems and was not believed to have breached security at the plants.

And Albasha said there was no immediate connection between Mobley’s activities in Yemen and his work at the plants.

Joe Szafran, a spokesman for Exelon Corp., which owns nuclear plants at three facilities in Eastern Pennsylvania, referred all questions about whether Mobley worked there to the FBI.

An FBI spokesman did not immediately return a call, but a law enforcement official told The Associated Press that authorities don’t believe Mobley’s job at the nuclear plant was related to his activities in Yemen. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter.

Abdel-Hadi Shehata, imam of the Islamic Society of Delaware, said Mobley lived in his apartment building and had a wife and a young daughter before moving to Yemen about two years ago.

Umar Hassan-El, assistant imam at the Islamic Society of Delaware’s mosque in Wilmington, Del., said he roomed with Mobley during a 2004 pilgrimage to Mecca.

The worst Mobley did, Hassan-El said, was forget to pick up his clothes or interrupt discussions among older Muslims.

“He gave no indication that he would join a group that he’s alleged to be a part of right now,” said hassan-El. “I never heard that boy ever talk about shooting anybody, killing anybody.”
