The last few years movies with solid moral messages have been showing up in movie theaters across the nation. They have been opening to great numbers. This is proof that there is a hunger for telling an honest story minus the gratuity of violence, sex and drugs.

Four men, one calling: To serve and protect

The synopsis of the movie tells of law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, and their partners are confident and focused. They willingly stand up to the worst the world can offer. Yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: fatherhood.

While they consistently give their best on the job, good enough seems to be all they can muster as dads. But they’re quickly discovering that their standard is missing the mark. They know that God desires to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, but their children are beginning to drift further and further away from them. Will they be able to find a way to serve and protect those that are most dear to them?

When tragedy hits home, these men are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering. Can a new found urgency help these dads draw closer to God … and to their children?

Moviegoers will again find themselves crying, laughing, and cheering—sometimes simultaneously—as they are inspired by everyday heroes who long to be the kinds of dads that make a lifelong impact on their children.

Protecting the streets is second nature to these law enforcement officers. Raising their children? That will take courage.

Take a moment and think about it….Courageous … honor begins at home.

The question on a lot of women’s minds, whether white or black, is to be married or not to be married? But there’s a problem when black women shoulder the burden of the plight of the black community falling behind in education, but offering skyrocketing crime and more unwed mothers. There are crusaders on both sides of the debate that black women should marry, but the consensus appears to be that black women do not want to be held accountable for what they feel is a shortage of black men to marry. According to MSNBC, the statistics are as follows: “The black community’s 72 percent rate eclipses that of most other groups: 17 percent of Asians, 29 percent of whites, 53 percent of Hispanics and 66 percent of Native Americans were born to unwed mothers in 2008, the most recent year for which government figures are available. The rate for the overall U.S. population was 41 percent.” In addition to those numbers, the black professional woman is even more singled out, (no pun intended), with 70 percent of them being unmarried. Crusaders like Dr. Natalie Carroll, an ob/gyn in Houston that encourages her unwed patients to marry and Christelyn Karazin, who started out as a single mother, is married to a white man and has four children, her first when she was unwed. She has put together a movement supported by 100 writers and activists for the online movement No Wedding No Womb, which according to MSNBC, she calls “a very simplified reduction of a very complicated issue.” Her initiative has been widely criticized. Both women find it absolutely necessary and detrimental to the black community for black women to marry and offer their child a mother and a father. Amy Wax, is a white woman and law professor at the University of Pennsylvania, whose written the book “Race, Wrongs and Remedies: Group Justice in the 21st Century.” She too feels that black women should marry to save the community. She goes as far as to say: “Blacks as a group will never be equal while they have this situation going on, where the vast majority of children do not have fathers in the home married to their mother, involved in their lives, investing in them, investing in the next generation.” Now what do you say ladies? Let us know what YOU think!

About the Women’s Empowerment

Women’s Empowerment is Radio One Raleigh’s largest and most anticipated event. Year after year, thousands of African American women (and men) come to Women’s Empowerment for an entire day of education, entertainment and empowerment. Created in 1994, in honor of Women’s History Month, Women’s Empowerment was designed to enhance the lives of African American women by addressing issues that specifically impact their “health, hearts and pocketbooks.” Throughout the day, this expo-styled event offers seminars, workshops, demonstrations, sampling, and shopping.

The program begins with a motivational speech by a nationally recognized speaker. Past speakers have included Dr. Joycelyn Elders, former U.S. Surgeon General; Susan L. Taylor, former editor in chief of Essence; Rolanda Watts, N.C. native and former talk show; Phylicia Rashad, former co-star of The Cosby Show; Iyanla Vanzant, noted motivational author; Debbie Allen; actress and choreographer, Queen Latifah, actress & recording artist; and awarding winner actress Angela Basset. Susan L. Taylor, of Essence Communications, appeared twice– in 1997 and again in 2002. The keynote speaker for 2004, the 10th Anniversary, was Vivica A. Fox. In celebration of that banner year, Blair Underwood was added to the program to bring forth the male perspective of today’s empowered woman. In 2005, our keynote speaker was television host Star Jones Reynolds. North Carolina’s own American Idol Fantasia Barrino was among the many musical artists who have performed at Women’s Empowerment Expo. In 2006, Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts was the keynote speaker, and in 2007 Grammy Award-Winner Natalie Cole delivered a moving keynote address! In 2008, actress, singer and all around diva Patti LaBelle graced the W.E. stage with words of encouragement and an awesome vocal performance that attendees will not soon forget. In 2009, songstress Mary J. Blige gave her powerful testimony. In 2010, Layla Ali brought the house down with her message of empowerment, encouragement and support.

Women’s Empowerment 2011 Keynote Speaker

Steve Harvey began doing stand-up comedy in the mid-1980s, which eventually led to a long stint as host of It’s Showtime at the Apollo. His success as a stand-up comedian led to multiple TV sitcoms, including: Me and The Boys on ABC from 1994-1995, The Steve Harvey Show on the WB from 1996-2002 and Steve Harvey Big Time Challenge on the WB from 2003-2005.

Throughout his television success, Harvey never lost sight of his true passion for stand-up comedy. In 1997 he continued touring as one of the Kings of Comedy alongside Cedric The Entertainer, the late Bernie Mac and D.L. Hughley. The immediate success of the tour led to the taping of one of the most successful comedy DVDs in history The Original Kings of Comedy directed by Spike Lee. In 2006 he released Don’t Trip, He Ain’t Through With Me Yet, a clean and family friendly DVD, unlike any he had ever done before. Due to the overwhelming demand for his original style of cutthroat and tell-it-like-it-is comedy, Harvey released a brand new comedy special on DVD entitled Still Trippin in stores now.

Currently Harvey hosts the nationally syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show, which airs in over 64 markets and has over 7 million listeners from 6-10 AM EST. The morning show has also allowed him to share relationship advice with his listeners through the Strawberry Letter segment, where he responds to relationship questions. This segment’s popularity led to a book deal with Harper Collins.

His first book Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man was released on January 27, 2009. The widely-acclaimed book is Harvey’s ultimate guide to unlocking the male mind, understanding his game, anticipating his moves and countering with unstoppable offense and defense. Harvey has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Nightline, Good Morning America, The Ellen Degeneres Show, The Tyra Banks Show, CBS’ The Early Show, NBC’s Late Night with Conan O’Brien, CNN Newsroom, The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet and several others to discuss HIS #1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLING BOOK!

Healthy eating is an important aspect of any eczema treatment. It is known that certain common foods can trigger a flare-up of eczema. Examples are peanuts, nuts, eggs, milk, soy and wheat. In fact, almost any food can trigger a reaction, which is why it is important to identify the culprits.

<<Hear my story here>>

There have been many arguments about whether food and healthy eating have any role to play in the cause of eczema and its treatment. A recent theory is that the underlying causes of eczema are food intolerances, nutritional deficiencies, poor digestion and imbalanced micro flora in the gut. If this is the case, then it is important that the issue of healthy diet be addressed as part of eczema treatment.

Whilst we have discussed foods to avoid from your diet, it is important to know which foods should be included as part of a healthy eating plan. Poor digestive function has been suggested as a possible cause, then it is important to look at foods that can improve the digestive system and overall health.

<<Hear my story here>>

Unrefined Carbohydrates such as brown rice, whole-meal bread, whole-wheat pasta, bran flakes, porridge oats, potatoes, and bananas are important to sustain energy and provide fiber. Fiber helps in the elimination process.

Fruits and Vegetables should be a large part of your healthy eating diet including plenty of green leafy vegetables. Fruit and vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants which are important for healthy skin and strengthening the immune system. It may be worth thinking about buying organic produce to avoid potentially harmful insecticides and herbicides which could trigger eczema.

Protein in the diet is necessary for maintaining and repairing tissues and strengthening your immune system. Good sources of protein can be found in meat, fish, eggs, soy, nuts, seeds, beans and dairy products.

Essential fatty acids (Omega 3 and 6 oils) have been found to improve eczema and other skin conditions. This is because they make hormone-like substances called prostaglandins which regulate inflammation and swelling as well as improving digestion and maintaining healthy skin. Essential fatty acids can be found in oily fish such as mackerel, salmon, tuna and herring. Other good sources are fresh seeds such as pumpkin and sunflower, flaxseed oil and walnuts.

Probiotics contain live bacteria which are thought to be healthy for the digestive system. Their use increases the number of friendly bacteria in the intestines and may reduce allergic reactions by improving digestion. The overuse of antibiotics, exposure to pollution, poor diet and stress are some of the factors which can reduce the level of these beneficial bacteria. If you have poor gut micro flora, you may be prone to symptoms such as diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, yeast infections and constipation. Several studies have found that probiotics are effective in the treatment of atopic dermatitis. Many yogurt products have probiotics added to them and this could be a great way of taking them. However, if you are allergic to milk products, you can take probiotics in supplement form. Other foods that contain natural probiotics are fermented foods such as miso, tempeh and sauerkraut.

As you have probably noticed, some of the foods mentioned such as milk, eggs and wheat are potential triggers to a flare-up of eczema. If these foods or others cause you problems, then it is important to avoid them and find an alternative.

To sum up, it is important to include healthy eating as part of your eczema treatment. By changing your diet to include healthy foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables and foods rich in omega oils, you will find that healthy eating can be an effective eczema treatment.

Evangelical practices mean more women attend church than men, writes David Murrow.

Do men hate going to church?

David Murrow says yes. “Christianity’s primary delivery system, the local church, is perfectly designed to reach women,” says Murrow, author of the book Why Men Hate Going to Church.

Noting that studies in the U.S. show that women make up 60 percent of a typical congregation, he asks: “What is it about modern Christianity that is driving men away?”

For him, the answer is simple: Churches today are designed for women.

“Christianity’s primary delivery system, the local church, is perfectly designed to reach women,” he says of the warm colours, robes, candles, flowers, sharing, tapestries, long sermons and soft, romantic worship music that are the hallmarks of many churches today.

“This church system offers little to stir the masculine heart, so men find it dull and irrelevant,” he states, adding that men who do go to church seem passive and bored.

Why is church not inviting for men? According to Murrow, it’s because men are drawn to risk, challenge and adventure. “But these things are discouraged in the local church,” he says. “Instead, most congregations offer a safe, nurturing community — an oasis of stability and predictability.”

At the same time, he maintains, the very definition of a good Christian has become feminized. Christians, he says, are supposed to be gentle, sensitive and nurturing, focused on home, family and hospitality. The godly are supposed to be calm, gentle, polite and sociable.

Murrow is aware that his observations might offend, particularly when you consider that the church is almost entirely led by males — and entirely by males, in the case of the Roman Catholic Church. All that means, he says, is that “the modern church is an army of women led by a few male generals.”

If you’re a man, I’m sure you’ve thought about how complex women are. How they simply can’t be figured out. How they do the most bizarre things, for unknown reasons. (If you’re a woman, it’s likely you agree.) If you have, then you will find this next statement confusing and perplexing. Women are not as complicated as you think they are. They’re actually rather simple.

Before you brush me off as a lunatic, hear me out. The primary reason that men and women don’t understand one another is because they don’t take the time to truly try. Within that context, we have to understand that men’s and women’s brains simply process information differently. The exact same even could happen to a man and to a woman and you would likely have two entirely different responses. As such, we have to work to understand where the opposite sex is coming from.

In the next several posts (because this topic is simply too long for only one post), I’m specifically addressing the men out there who are in relationships — spouses, boyfriends, fiancees, etc. If you’re single and reading this, my hope is that you’d take note for the future. My goal here is to better help the men understand the women in their lives so they may more effectively care for them, love them, and grow into a deeper relationship with each other.

Before I start, let me give you a quick disclaimer: I will generalize most women in the following paragraphs. Yes, I understand that not all women want these things out of relationships, but it is more worthwhile to inform the gentlemen about the majority of women than the few for whom these things are not true. I’m not an expert with formal training of any sort — I’m simply an observer, and a learner. The following is what I have gleaned from my experiences and those of others, combined with the wisdom of professionals. (Once I finish this series, I will give you a few resources that will further your learning.)

Men, there are a few basic things that women want, and need, from their relationships with you, as their significant other. Without further ado, here is the first of three things women want:

She wants her feelings to be heard and understood, not solved.

Men, I understand that we naturally like to solve problems. It’s what we do. When your woman tells you about a problem at work, or a problem with her mother, you instantly begin creating solutions, don’t you? (I know you do because I do it too.) Well, stop. Or at least stop telling her what those solutions are unless she asks you to. She doesn’t really care about them. What means more is that you listened to her and understand how she’s feeling, not that you’ve fixed the problem.

You may be asking yourself, “Why does she tell me all this stuff if she doesn’t want me to solve anything? This is a waste of my time.” It’s simple — she wants you to understand her feelings. Her sharing and your understanding brings you together on an emotional level (which is most important to her). She wants to tell you because she cares about you.

Don’t get it twisted — our logical, problem solving skills can still be utilized. In fact, she enjoys seeing you solve puzzles and problems; they just have to be on issues that don’t involve her emotions. Like the car making a weird sound. If she tells you, “Baby, my car made some kind of strange rattling sound today as I was driving home from work,” don’t ask her how that made her feel. Just get the problem fixed. If the problem is emotional, you listen; if it’s not, get it fixed.

If you’ve ever talked to your woman at the end of the day (or, heck, at any point in any day), you know that she’s got a lot to say (if she doesn’t, that’s a bad sign). It’s likely that a good portion of what she has to say concerns her emotions and how she was feelings while said events are going on. Of course, if you asked us, we’d give a one word answer that would frustrate her. But no, she’s different — she always has a lot to say. And while it might seem that most of what she has to say isn’t important to you, but it is very important to her. That’s why she’s sharing it with you — because she finds it important. She simply wants you to understand her problems; her perspective. With that said, it’s important that you listen.

Let her talk about anything and everything she desires (that includes you) and — here’s the key — listen to her. Focus on her. Make eye contact with her. Make her feel like she is the most important thing in your world at that moment. Turn off all the other distractions and pay attention. You can’t pay attention to her while you’re watching TV or texting someone on your phone. I don’t care if you think you can, she doesn’t see it that way. she wants you to devote and focus your attention on her for these few minutes.

(If, for some reason, you can’t give her that undivided attention at that moment, but, she wants to talk, it’s a good idea to say something like, “Baby, I understand you’re upset and I do want to listen to you, but I need about five minutes. Then, I’m all ears, ok?” Telling her that shows that you are interested in what she has to say, while also showing her that she’s important enough to give her your undivided attention).

VIA: Men’s Health

Big little stressor No. 1: Insecurity

Not surprisingly, paying bills, managing debt and sticking to a budget scored highest of all the stressors in our survey. But guess what? It’s not about the money, says Thomas Miller, Ph.D., a University of Kentucky psychologist and the author of Handbook of Stressful Life Transitions Across the Lifespan. “Much financial stress actually has to do with uncertainty—about your money situation, yes, but that really means your job. Not knowing specifics about where you stand eats at you like acid.”

Defuse it: Go on a fact-finding mission, Miller says. Demand answers to those elephant-in-the-room questions at work. Ask your boss how you fit into the company’s plans, or what you can do to make yourself more valuable. If he pauses or doesn’t appear truthful, push him with “Can you be more specific?” or even “So do you think I should be concerned?” “The more answers you’re given about your situation, the more clarity you’ll have—and clarity equals control,” Miller says.

Bonus tip: Worried about your job? Relieve your stress by using these 6 tricks to prevent being laid off.

Big little stressor No. 2: Hair loss

More than half the men in our poll felt stressed about their images, and many specified hair loss as the mane, er, main culprit. They’re not alone: A 2005 Mayo Clinic Proceedings review cites multiple studies showing that male pattern baldness negatively affects men’s feelings of attractiveness and body image. “For those guys who are feeling judged by their hair loss, the stress is very real,” Good says.

Defuse it: Reframe the problem as a medical issue, Good suggests. Treating hair loss with transplants costs $4,500 on average, while drug treatments can cost as much as $60 a month, for decades. Then run the numbers and decide if the expense is truly worth it to you, Good says. If it is, then go for it. But if you think you can deal with it as a mere medical inconvenience, you’ll be more easily able to snuff out this stressor.

Bonus tip: Find out which hair-loss treatments work best—and which you shouldn’t waste your money on—here.

Big little stressor No. 3: Exercise

How’s this for a bitter irony: Exercise is a well-known stress buster, yet nearly a third of the men in our poll rated sticking to an exercise program a 7 or higher on a 10-point stress scale. First, you stress about missing a workout or not exercising at all. Second, as you attempt to carve out time to exercise, your stress skyrockets as you cram in all the other things you need to accomplish that day. “That struggle may affect how and what you’re eating,” Miller says, “and now your food intake becomes a stressor.”

Defuse it: Miller suggests portion control—for your workout schedule. Shrink your exercise “portions” by boosting intensity: Turn your cardio routine into a shorter interval workout that alternates sprints with your normal pace. (You’ll also boost fat-burning this way.) If you’re lifting weights, cut your between-set rest in half—go from a minute to 30 seconds between each of 12 sets, and you’ll save six minutes. Then look for ways to condense other activities: showering, cooking, surfing the Web, and so forth. You have the time. You simply have to own it.

Bonus tip: Always have a workout on hand with the upgraded Men’s Health iPhone app. It’s like having your own personal trainer, 24/7, wherever you go.

When I see a woman for the first time, there are three things that I immediately look at: her face, her shoes, and her left ring finger — in that order. Overall physique and body type is important, but, I’ll get to that as I move from her face to her shoes and over to her ring finger. Why the ring finger? There’s no use thinking about anything further if her finger is occupied with a wedding (or even engagement) ring, is there?

Lately I’ve noticed that many women wear other types of rings on their left ring finger — the finger where people usually wear a wedding band. However, these rings don’t signify any commitment to another person, something a wedding/engagement ring does, and, in fact, can serve to confuse interested single men.

I have seen this technique used to one’s advantage, though. I have a good female friend who is single and travels about three weeks out of any given month. She’s open to dating, but it’s certainly not her top priority. In order to keep away random guys who try to approach her, — because, believe me, they do (and I can’t blame them) — she wears an engagement ring. It’s a nice one too. Of course, it’s not real, but a man who would approach her in the airport wouldn’t notice — especially since most men don’t have good sense in jewelry and it’s authenticity.

This is where it gets a bit tricky. A guy such as myself, even if I thought she was attractive, would see the ring, count her out, and keep moving. In essence, her “Mr. Right” could just keep it moving because he sees her finger occupied. And, being the respectful gentleman that he is, he knows it’s inappropriate to try to holler at a woman who’s already spoken for.

I realize that this may not be an issue for everyone. Some people may see a ring on the finger and proceed as if it didn’t exist. But, I can’t do such a thing. Neither would most of the respectable men I know. After all, ladies, would you want a man that tried to holler at you thinking that you were married? What does this say about his feelings about the sanctity of marriage? What would stop him from cheating on you? That relationship probably wouldn’t be the least bit healthy.

What’s a girl to do? Whatever the heck she wants. That’s what she’ll do anyhow, regardless of what I write about, isn’t it? Ultimately it is a personal choice. I just can’t help but wonder if, by wearing a ring on that finger, a woman might miss the man she’s supposed to be with. What do you think?
