Ah, Christmas… It’s that time of year again. The time when we sing Christmas… err… to be politically correct… holiday songs (most of which have little or nothing to do with Jesus and more to do with Santa), give gifts to those we care about (because doing it any other time just wouldn’t make sense), and, of course, we put up all kinds of decorations around the house — lights, trees, ornaments, stockings, berries, branches, and ribbons. All this in order to, allegedly, celebrate the birth of Christ.

12 Days Of Light Shows- Day#7 -“Carol Of The Bells”

But wait… did I miss something? What does a Christmas tree, eggnog, mistletoe, stockings, or eight reindeer have to do with the Son of God? Sounds like some kind of bad riddle, doesn’t it?

I’m pretty sure those things — in fact, probably 85 percent of what we do when it comes to Christmas — have absolutely nothing to do with the true reason for the season, which, is the birth of Jesus Christ into the world.

We talk about giving gifts to symbolize the gift that God gave us in His son, Jesus, and that’s great. Wonderful. But what about the other things? What about stockings? What about the Christmas tree? How do those relate to Jesus? (And let’s not even get into the whole Santa thing.)

But maybe it’s just some harmless traditions. Maybe it doesn’t really mean anything. Maybe there’s nothing wrong with gifts, and trees, and non-Jesus Christmas songs. Or maybe there is something wrong with it all. Maybe we become so focused on the “stuff” around the holidays that we forget what it’s really about. And if those things detract from our understanding and celebration of Christ does that mean they’re an idol in our lives? Because what is an idol, but something which we place in higher esteem than God?

What Is The Song “12 Days Of Christmas” About?

Doesn’t Christmas become so all consuming that we schedule our lives around it sometimes? Trying to figure out when and where we can get the best gifts, and thinking about how we want to decorate the house, and what’s for dinner, and who’s coming over, and who’ll sit where, and the list goes on and on, doesn’t it?

Overall, there’s not a doubt in my mind that we have lost focus of what Christmas in about. But I can’t change the way a country celebrates a holiday and neither can you. So what can we do? Focus on the “who” behind the “why” and tell those you love about Christ, and his coming to Earth for the sole purpose of dying for their sins that they might accept His gift, gain eternal life, and have the most memorable Christmas ever.

One is the Son of God. The other is the President of the United States. But to American teens, Barack Obama and Jesus Christ are equal when it comes to who they see as their role model, a new study shows.
A Barna Group study, released Monday, on teen role models found that while two out of three teens named someone they know personally as a person they looked up to, some did mention high-profile leaders on their list.

The favorite role model among teens was a relative, with 37 percent of teens identifying a grandparent, sibling, cousin, aunt or uncle as someone they admire most other than their parents. The study did not include parents as an option since it was an automatic response for many.

Teens in the study, aged 13 to 17, also mentioned teachers and coaches (11 percent), friends (9 percent), and pastors or other religious leaders they know personally (6 percent) as their personal role models.
At least 6 percent of teens listed entertainers as their role model of choice compared to 1 percent who said they admired science or medical professionals. Other types of people mentioned were sports heroes (5 percent), political leaders (4 percent) and faith leaders (4 percent).

President Obama and Jesus Christ were commonly named as teen role models, each receiving 3 percent of the votes. Teenagers looked up to Obama for his hard work and self-confidence. Jesus resonated among teens because of his concern for others and being an example to follow.

Other famous people who got multiple mentions included Lady Gaga, Oprah Winfrey, LeBron James and Paul McCartney.

“For better and worse, teens are emulating the people they know best,” said David Kinnaman, president of the Barna Group. “Many parents and youth workers fret about the role models of the next generation. Yet, one reason to remain hopeful about the development of young people is their reliance upon the people they know best: friends, relatives, teachers, pastors, and coaches.”

“At the same time, that reality underscores the insistence of many parents that they influence the people with whom their child associates, in order to be sure that their kids are surrounded by people modeling positive values and life choices,” he added.

Most teenagers chose their role model based on the personality traits of the person (26 percent), identifying them as being caring, loving, polite, or courageous. The second biggest factor in teens’ decision for their role model was someone teens wanted to emulate or “follow in the footsteps” of (22 percent). Other factors included a role model accomplishing his or her goals (13 percent), encouraging them by helping them become a better person or being there for them (11 percent) and overcoming adversity (9 percent).

Kinnaman observed that faith and religion played a small role in the choosing of teen role models.

“Even among young Christians, their role models are virtually no different than other teenagers,” he noted.
The study was based on a nationwide online survey of 602 teens.

With so many people focused on dieting and being fit in the new year, I thought I would share this article by Gabrielle Johnson, a weight loss advocate. I think she offers great tips that will help all of us in our journey to better health. As always, I hope this blesses you.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

My initial reason for writing this article was to talk about priorities in 2011. As I pondered what we as a culture spend money on, I was led to write about one main priority, our health. Particularly our weight, that so easily besets us.

Let me preface this by stating, I am not a Doctor. So I am writing this article as Oprah says, “One Thing I know for Sure”. As a woman over forty, I have learned some necessary components for our diets, that maybe a little different from days gone by. For the most part, I have always been pretty health conscious. I read a lot about nutrition, weight loss and even briefly worked for one of the top weight loss companies in the country. But at around forty-five I started noticing rapid weight gain, especially in areas where I never had any weight issues. Did I happen to say, where I never gained weight? Ok, just checking. One month I gained almost thirty pounds, that was scary. I then began the doctor tour. Doctor after doctor to no avail. I did not have a thyroid problem, a sleep problem or any of that.
I started to take charge of my own health and went back to the basics and that is what I would like to share.

First, we have to make sure and Dr. Oz concurs, that we are getting enough fiber. The American Dietetic Association recommends 25 grams for a 2,000 calorie diet and around 30 grams for a 2,500 calorie diet. Fiber has been shown to lower cholesterol, prevents heart disease, controls diabetes but as it relates to weight; the more fiber you consume the fuller you feel. When the body is full, you will probably eat less fatty and nutrient poor foods.

Secondly, protein is extremely important in our diets. Protein contains essential amino acids and it helps the body function properly. Protein keeps you from being hungry. We should try to incorporate protein into every meal. Protein is not just found in meats, but also beans, nuts, whole grains, eggs and even milk. The recommended amount is anywhere from 40 – 90 grams per day depending on age, gender or the situation.

Another thing, “I know for sure” when you’re trying to lose weight, you MUST eat every 3 – 3 ½ hours, no later. This is major especially if you are having a problem losing weight. Eating every three hours speeds your metabolism, regulates your blood sugar and keeps you from over eating at one meal. Often times I hear people say they only eat once a day and they don’t understand why they can not seem to lose weight. Well the body needs fuel. The body goes into starvation mode and begins to store fat.

I know this one may be a cliché, but I know this for sure, BREAKFAST is definitely the most important meal of the day. Remember, these are things I have learned for sure, the hard way. Think about it, the body has been at rest all night. So when you awake in the morning, your body needs fuel to start the day. You have basically fasted all night, so in order to begin the day, you need to break-the-fast, hence BREAKFAST. It is a good practice to make sure protein is apart of your breakfast. Turkey Bacon, Protein Shakes, Eggs, Smoothies, etc. Something with a good source of protein.
I usually have a protein shake as soon as my feet hit the floor in the morning. It keeps me full longer and gives me the energy I need to get started. Following this type of lifestyle, notice I did not say diet, has helped me to finally start losing this excess weight. So let’s join together in making our health, especially our excess weight, our top priority in 2011.

If there had been time, Marie Exley would have liked to start a family. Instead, the 32-year-old Army veteran has less than six months left, which she’ll spend spreading a stark warning: Judgment Day is almost here.

Exley is part of a movement of Christians loosely organized by radio broadcasts and websites, independent of churches and convinced by their reading of the Bible that the end of the world will begin May 21, 2011.

To get the word out, they’re using billboards and bus stop benches, traveling caravans of RVs and volunteers passing out pamphlets on street corners. Cities from Bridgeport, Conn., to Little Rock, Ark., now have billboards with the ominous message, and mission groups are traveling through Latin America and Africa to spread the news outside the U.S.

“A lot of people might think, ‘The end’s coming, let’s go party,’” said Exley, a veteran of two deployments in Iraq. “But we’re commanded by God to warn people. I wish I could just be like everybody else, but it’s so much better to know that when the end comes, you’ll be safe.”

In August, Exley left her home in Colorado Springs, Colo., to work with Oakland, Calif.-based Family Radio Worldwide, the independent Christian ministry whose leader, Harold Camping, has calculated the May 21 date based on his reading of the Bible.

She is organizing traveling columns of RVs carrying the message from city to city, a logistics challenge that her military experience has helped solve. The vehicles are scheduled to be in five North Carolina cities between now and the second week of January, but Exley will shortly be gone: overseas, where she hopes to eventually make it back to Iraq.

“I don’t really have plans to come back,” she said. “Time is short.”

Not everyone who’s heard Camping’s message is taking such a dramatic step. They’re remaining in their day-to-day lives, but helping publicize the prophecy in other ways. Allison Warden, of Raleigh, has been helping organize a campaign using billboards, post cards and other media in cities across the U.S. through a website, We Can Know.

The 29-year-old payroll clerk laughs when asked about reactions to the message, which is plastered all over her car.

“It’s definitely against the grain, I know that,” she said. “We’re hoping people won’t take our word for it, or Harold Camping’s word for it. We’re hoping that people will search the scriptures for themselves.”

Camping, 89, believes the Bible essentially functions as a cosmic calendar explaining exactly when various prophecies will be fulfilled.

The retired civil engineer said all his calculations come from close readings of the Bible, but that external events like the foundation of the state of Israel in 1948 are signs confirming the date.

“Beyond the shadow of a doubt, May 21 will be the date of the Rapture and the day of judgment,” he said.

The doctrine known as the Rapture teaches that believers will be taken up to heaven, while everyone else will remain on earth for a period of torment, concluding with the end of time. Camping believes that will happen in October.

“If May 21 passes and I’m still here, that means I wasn’t saved. Does that mean God’s word is inaccurate or untrue? Not at all,” Warden said.

The belief that Christ will return to earth and bring an end to history has been a basic element of Christian belief since the first century. The Book of Revelation, which comes last in the New Testament, describes this conclusion in vivid language that has inspired Christians for centuries.

But few churches are willing to set a date for the end of the world, heeding Jesus’ words in the gospels of Mark and Matthew that no one can know the day or hour it will happen. Predictions like Camping’s, though, aren’t new. One of the most famous in history was by the Baptist leader William Miller, who predicted the end for Oct. 22, 1844, which came to be known as the Great Disappointment among his followers, some of whom subsequently founded the Seventh Day Adventist church.

“In the U.S., there is still a significant population, mostly Protestant, who look at the Bible as kind of a puzzle, and the puzzle is God’s word and it’s predicting when the end times will come,” said Catherine Wessinger, a professor at Loyola University in New Orleans who studies millennialism, the belief in pending apocalypse.

“A lot of times these prophecies gain traction when difficulties are happening in society,” she said. “Right now, there’s a lot of insecurity, and this is a promise that says it’s not all random, it’s part of God’s plan.”

Past predictions that failed to come true don’t have any bearing on the current calculation, believers maintain.

“It would be like telling the Wright brothers that every other attempt to fly has failed, so you shouldn’t even try,” said Chris McCann, who works with eBible Fellowship, one of the groups spreading the message.

For believers like McCann, theirs is actually a message of hope and compassion: God’s compassion for people, and the hope that there’s still time to be saved.

That, ultimately, is what spurs on Exley, who said her beliefs have alienated her from most of her friends and family. Her hope is that not everyone who hears her message will mock it, and that even people who dismiss her now might still come to believe.

“If you still want to say we’re crazy, go ahead,” she said. “But it doesn’t hurt to look into it.”
