King hit 2-year-old Samyah Bailey with a stray bullet outside her Staten Island home on Wednesday.

With blood dripping down into the little girl’s eyes, Williams whisked Samyah into a car and rushed her to the hospital. They were met by an ambulance along the way, and got a police escort.

We used to use the term “it takes a village to raise a child,” but it is still allowed today?

It seems that everywhere I look lately I see some form of verbal aggression taking place in our public discourse, or worse, in the form of physical altercations among our fellow citizens, neighbors and friends.

Physical displays of frustration and anger seem to be a new accepted norm in or modern 21st century culture. We see it on reality television shows like Bravo’s Real Housewives or VH-1′s Basketball Wives, and let’s not forget Jersey Shore. Our teenage girls arrange to have violent fight in school and post the videos on Facebook, and our politicians and leaders are often foul-mouthed, menacing and uncivil in their discourse towards one another.

Welcome to the wild wild west of “say what you need to say”, and if that doesn’t work just hit somebody and set them straight. Yes, America has become a place where being angry and slapping the mess out of someone is well, acceptable. Yet, how acceptable is it for parents to climb aboard a school bus and slap someone else’s child who they feel has violated their own son or daughter’s personal space? Is that where we should draw the line or is it okay for a 30-year-old mom to slap around someone else’s 9-year-old kid?

In my opinion, an adult should never physically assault another person’s child. Never. It is unconscionable and unacceptable under any circumstance. However, physical correction by a responsible adult in authority may be permissible and here is why: Discipline starts in the proverbial “village” when we are young. I am old enough to remember in the mid-1970s where my 1st grade teacher Mrs. Burgerhoff, would take us in the closet and give us a good whack on the bottom if we were disrespectful to our classmates or to her. And many of my friends who attended Catholic schools can tell you about getting a good whack on the knuckles from a nun. Worse, they called your parents and your mom or dad would come to school and whack you again for daring to disrespect your elders or a fellow classmate. We understood that we had to conduct ourselves like decent little human beings or we would pay a physical price — a good smack and tongue lashing to boot. It worked well, and we simply did not have the problems that we see in our schools and culture today.

The challenge we face now, however, is that too many kids are not being taught the proper respect and values at home, or how to conduct themselves in public. And sadly the parents are often aggressive and ill-tempered. It is the perfect storm for the incidents we have seen over the past year on school buses where parents (black parents — just sayin) have wandered on to the school bus and accosted other people’s kids for allegedly threatening one of their own offspring. Folks we gotta do better than this.

In the final analysis, we all agree that the village should raise the child. But, where do we draw the line? Who determines what is appropriate and what is over the line?

Here’s the thing: I still fear certain elders in my life, or maybe I should say revere them because I first respect them. The problem with the village now is that the kids no longer respect the adults, and the village leaders often act like the village idiots. If we want our young people to act right, then we need to act right. If want them to not beat on each other or cuss each other out than we have to set that example amongst ourselves as adults. Hitting a school kid because he hit your kid is just down right stupid, and even more, it’s assault and those who do it should be prosecuted and made an example of for all to see.

Prosperity Movement

The time is “now”, to invest in educating youth about prosperity. 74% of our youth  are concern  about the economy, and 500,000 of the youth within the state of Illinois are living below poverty level and  throughout the  nation.  Since financial literacy is not added within a vast majority of elementary schools curriculum let us deliver financial literacy to the door steps of the schools.

We must break the  poverty stricken mentality and embrace prosperity consciousness by connecting 200 banks to invest 200 “Save That Penny For A Sunny Day” books and workbooks, to 200 schools  a book that educates youth about entrepreneurship, finances, and budgeting and inspire and encourage prosperity per school.

We might have missed the Olympic bid but we can seize the opportunity and this sense of urgency  to pass the batton of prosperity consciousness then surely we can redirect our youth from self destruction behavior to self worth action.

The goal is to have the “Save That Penny For A Sunny Day” book and workbooks delivered during African American History month to fulfill yet another dream to educate and inspire a nation of youth to lead a  life of prosperity and service to all  communities abroad  . (Read More)

The Durham Rescue Mission said Thursday that it still needs 10,000 new, unwrapped toys for children attending the group’s Christmas toy giveaway on Dec. 23.

The mission is asking for donations so every child who attends the event will receive toys.

“Please join me in helping to provide for our children by donating new toys, books, and games,” Mayor Bill Bell said in a statement. 

In addition to the toy giveaway, the mission will serve a free traditional Christmas meal with all the trimmings, and hand out free clothing and groceries at the event. Games and other activities for the children will also be available.

The event will start at noon at the mission, located at 1201 E. Main St.

Anyone who would like to donate toys should call the mission at 919-688-9641 for more information. Financial gifts can be donated online.

Last year, more than 7,000 toys, 8,000 pieces of clothing, 3,000 meals and 1,022 bags of groceries were given away.

In 2008, the mission gave away more than 7,000 toys, 10,000 pieces of clothing and 850 bags of groceries at its annual celebration.

Parents Prayer Of Protection

Dear God, Please bless my children.

For this I pray:
May they thrive in any economy.
May they be safe and protected.
May they be healthy and happy.
May they be uplifted by love.
May they be strengthened by opportunity.
May their days be filled with fun and play.
May all their needs be met—always.
May there be food, clothing, shelter, and comfort.
And may their souls be nurtured no matter the state of our world.

MaLinda Sapp, wife of gospel singer and pastor Marvin Sapp, died last week after an 18-month struggle with colon cancer. Marvin Sapp and his children pay tribute to Malinda by reading a memorable poem called ‘Footprints In The Sand’ and Marvin sings an encouraging song, “Let go and let God have his way.”

Healthy eating is an important aspect of any eczema treatment.  It is known that certain common foods can trigger a flare-up of eczema. Examples are peanuts, nuts, eggs, milk, soy and wheat.  In fact, almost any food can trigger a reaction, which is why it is important to identify the culprits.

There have been many arguments about whether food and healthy eating have any role to play in the cause of eczema and its treatment. A recent theory is that the underlying causes of eczema are food intolerances, nutritional deficiencies, poor digestion and imbalanced micro flora in the gut.  If this is the case, then it is important that the issue of healthy diet be addressed as part of eczema treatment.

Whilst we have discussed foods to avoid from your diet, it is important to know which foods should be included as part of a healthy eating plan.  Poor digestive function has been suggested as a possible cause, then it is important to look at foods that can improve the digestive system and overall health.

Unrefined Carbohydrates such as brown rice, whole-meal bread, whole-wheat pasta, bran flakes, porridge oats, potatoes, and bananas are important to sustain energy and provide fiber. Fiber helps in the elimination process.

Fruits and Vegetables should be a large part of your healthy eating diet including plenty of green leafy vegetables. Fruit and vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants which are important for healthy skin and strengthening the immune system.  It may be worth thinking about buying organic produce to avoid potentially harmful insecticides and herbicides which could trigger eczema.

Protein in the diet is necessary for maintaining and repairing tissues and strengthening your immune system.  Good sources of protein can be found in meat, fish, eggs, soy, nuts, seeds, beans and dairy products.

Essential fatty acids (Omega 3 and 6 oils) have been found to improve eczema and other skin conditions. This is because they make hormone-like substances called prostaglandins which regulate inflammation and swelling as well as improving digestion and maintaining healthy skin.  Essential fatty acids can be found in oily fish such as mackerel, salmon, tuna and herring.  Other good sources are fresh seeds such as pumpkin and sunflower, flaxseed oil and walnuts.

Probiotics contain live bacteria which are thought to be healthy for the digestive system. Their use increases the number of friendly bacteria in the intestines and may reduce allergic reactions by improving digestion.  The overuse of antibiotics, exposure to pollution, poor diet and stress are some of the factors which can reduce the level of these beneficial bacteria. If you have poor gut micro flora, you may be prone to symptoms such as diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, yeast infections and constipation.  Several studies have found that probiotics are effective in the treatment of atopic dermatitis.  Many yogurt products have probiotics added to them and this could be a great way of taking them.  However, if you are allergic to milk products, you can take probiotics in supplement form.  Other foods that contain natural probiotics are fermented foods such as miso, tempeh and sauerkraut.

As you have probably noticed, some of the foods mentioned such as milk, eggs and wheat are potential triggers to a flare-up of eczema.  If these foods or others cause you problems, then it is important to avoid them and find an alternative.

To sum up, it is important to include healthy eating as part of your eczema treatment.  By changing your diet to include healthy foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables and foods rich in omega oils, you will find that healthy eating can be an effective eczema treatment.
