League commissioner Jim Delany said Monday November 14, 2011 that it is ”inappropriate” to keep Joe Paterno’s name on the trophy that will be awarded December 3, 2011 after the first Big Ten championship game.

Penn State excused its longtime head coach Paterno from his coaching duties last week and investigations are under way into allegations of child sex-abuse involving a former assistant for the Penn State University.

The trophy was named the Stagg-Paterno Championship Trophy. Coach Amos Alonzo Stagg won 319 games in 57 years. Most of his victories were with University of Chicago, Joe Paterno’s 409 wins are the most by a major college coach edging out Grambling’s Coach Eddie Robinson’s 408 victories.

The trophy will now be called the Stagg Championship Trophy.
Robert Stagg of Grand Rapids, Michigan is the great grandson of Amos Alonzo Stagg. Robert Staggs said last week that his family was honored to have the Stagg name on the trophy whatever happened with the Paterno’s name.

But with all NBA games cancelled through the end of November — and potentially longer if a contract deal between team owners and players isn’t reached Saturday — lucrative markets such as New York are going to be the real losers, observers said.

“From what I gather, there’s no other [event] that does as well for the Garden as the Knicks,” said Robert Boland, a sports business professor at NYU’s Tisch Center. “The Garden … in the larger sense can live for a month — but every other [cancelled] game after is significant because they’re losing their best product.”

Ben Wallace was arraigned in Bloomfield Township, MI on charges of driving drunk and carrying a concealed weapon. The Detroit Pistons basketball player was pulled over for reckless driving. He admitted to authorities he just left the club and consumed four beers two hours prior. After administering a breathalyzer test, police discovered he was over the Michigan legal limit of 0.08 percent at 0.14 percent. After being scooped up, police searched the vehicle and found an unloaded gun in a backpack not registered to him, but to a family member. He claimed it was his wife’s.

On Monday the NBA player will stand before Judge Kimberly Small, who previously sentenced former college and professional basketball player Jalen Rose to jail for drunk driving. Wallace signed a four-year, $60 million deal with the Chicago Bulls in 2006.
From there, Wallace was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers before re-signing with the Pistons as a free agent for a 1-year deal.

Leicester Bryce Stovell sued LeBron and his mother Gloria last year claiming they defamed him, blocked him from making money and tampered with paternity test results that showed he was not LeBron’s father. According to TMZ, a Washington, DC judge has dismissed all eight claims in Stovell’s lawsuit. In the docs, the court said Stovell had insufficient facts to support his claims, and “had not identified any damages.”
As for Stovell’s belief he could have earned big money, the court said, “Apparently Stovell believes that companies are willing to pay him for being the father of LeBron James.” Tthe court once again said Stovell has no proof to back that claim. Stovell, a lawyer who claims a one-night stand with Gloria led to her pregnancy with LeBron, tells TMZ he still thinks there is “a likelihood” that he is the NBA star’s biological father, and he wants to retake a DNA test.

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward and Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones were both arrested over the weekend in separate incidents.

Ward, winner of the last “Dancing With the Stars,” was taken into custody early Saturday outside Atlanta on a drunken driving charge, sheriff’s officials said.

The former Super Bowl MVP was booked into the DeKalb County jail at 3:41 a.m. and charged with driving under the influence. A jail official said he was released on $1,300 bond, according to the AP.

Atlanta lawyer Andrew Ree issued a statement saying the 35-year-old Ward cooperated fully with police and truthfully answered their questions.

“From our preliminary investigation we can tell you that we are confident that the facts will show that Hines was NOT impaired by alcohol while driving,” Ree wrote. “However, Hines is deeply saddened by this incident and apologizes to his fans and the Steelers organization for this distraction.”

In Cincinnati, Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones was arrested Sunday in Cincinnati on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct while intoxicated and resisting arrest, adding to the list of off-the-field troubles that have marred his career.

Jones was jailed around 3 a.m. local time and released later in the morning. Cincinnati media outlets reported documents filed in court accuse Jones of being disorderly and shouting profanities in a downtown bar and trying to pull away as officers arrested him.

Jones denied the allegations in an interview with a local television station after leaving jail. He said he hadn’t been drinking.

Jones repeatedly has had troubles away from football, including at least six other arrests and a dozen instances that involved police intervention.

Tiger Woods pulled out of the U.S. Open on Tuesday because of nagging issues with his left leg, leaving him uncertain how soon he can resume his pursuit of Jack Nicklaus’ record for major titles.

It will be the first time Woods has missed the U.S. Open since 1994, when he had just graduated high school.

“I am extremely disappointed that I won’t be playing in the U.S. Open, but it’s time for me to listen to my doctors and focus on the future,” Woods said on his website. “I was hopeful that I could play, but if I did, I risk further damage to my left leg. My knee and Achilles tendon are not fully healed.”

Woods said he hoped to be ready for the AT&T National, which starts June 30 at Aronomink, and the next two majors. Then again, he said two weeks ago he would do everything possible to be ready for the U.S. Open, which is far more significant.

The U.S. Open starts June 16 at Congressional, where Woods won the AT&T National two years ago and tied for 19th when the U.S. Open was last played there in 1997.

Woods was replaced by Michael Whitehead, a senior at Rice who was first alternate from the Dallas qualifier. Whitehead had to win a playoff just to get out of the first stage of 18-hole qualifying, and was stunned to get the news.

“They said on the phone that Tiger has withdrawn from the Open,” Whitehead said. “So, ‘Thanks, Tiger.’ I guess I’m glad he was listening to his doctors.”

Ending a long and ugly legal battle, a Chicago court has awarded Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade sole “care, custody and control” of his two sons, reports the Associated Press, and delivered some harsh words for his ex-wife Siohvaughn Wade.

The boys arrived in Miami on Friday, shortly after the ruling was filed, and Wade told the AP that “a huge weight is off my back.”

“My life changed in a huge way,” he said. “Mentally, I’ve been preparing for it for over a year now. To me, it’s bigger than that. For me, it shows a lot of people that you need to fight to be in your kids’ lives sometimes. You fight until you can’t fight any more. That’s all I was trying to be, a father in his kids’ lives.”

Regarding Wade’s ex-wife, a portion of the 102-page ruling entered by Judge Renee G. Goldfarb read, “This court finds that (Siohvaughn Wade) has embarked on an unstoppable and relentless pattern of conduct for over two years to alienate the children from their father, and lacks either the ability or the willingness to facilitate, let alone encourage, a close and continuing relationship between them.”

Former Los Angeles Lakers player AC Green received the 2011 Bobby Jones Award at the All-Star Breakfast in Los Angeles.

The All-Star Breakfast honors NBA personalities who demonstrate character and leadership both on and off the court. During the All-Star Breakfast, Athletes in Action presented the Jerry Colangelo Award and the Bobby Jones Award – which recognized “all-star” role models for their contributions on the court, in the workplace, in the home and in the community. The award is named after Bobby Jones, who was part of the 1983 NBA Champion Philadelphia 76ers team.

“The awards honor those that exhibit character, leadership and faith in the world of basketball, in the home and in the community. Both these individuals have done that and continue to do so,” said Dave Lower, spokesman for Athletes in Action, which hosts the breakfast.

Through AC Green Youth Foundation, Green works with young people to help build their character and teach them moral principles like sexual abstinence until marriage.

Upon accepting the honor, Green spoke about the importance of making right choices. After becoming a Christian as a teenager, he said he started to make right choices instead of following what the crowd did.

Athletes in Action, the sports ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ, is represented in 96 countries around the world and on over 80 college campuses, according to Lower. The group’s mission is to use the platform of sport so that everyone knows someone who truly follows Jesus.

AIA also honors other notable sports players throughout the year in their Sports Legend Series. In addition to the All-Star Breakfast, the ministry also holds Super Bowl Breakfast during the NFL title game and Legends of the Hardwood Breakfast during the Final Four weekend.

As the NBA’s best gather in Los Angeles for the 2011 NBA All-Star Weekend, there is one All-Star tradition with a goal that goes beyond points and rebounds. Hosted by international sports ministry Athletes in Action, the 6th annual All-Star Breakfast embodies the popular quote, “Basketball doesn’t build character.
