The Hall of Fame center and New York Knicks great is close friends with Charlotte owner Michael Jordan and the sources said Ewing was a serious candidate for the post. Charlotte are also reportedly interested in Golden State Warriors assistant Mike Malone and former Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan.

The stronger candidates are expected to wait until the May 30 draft lottery before making any decisions on their future, because it is then that they will find out if the Bobcats will win the No. 1 overall pick to take Kentucky’s star center Anthony Davis.

Charlotte announced last week that coach Paul Silas would not return after a forgettable 7-59 season — the team’s 0.106 winning percentage was the worst in NBA history.Ewing has been waiting for years for an opportunity to become a head coach at the NBA level, having spent the past eight seasons as an assistant.

Police reports say King followed the teaser to a car and hit him in the face. The victim hurriedly climbed into a vehicle and locked the passenger side door, then called 911. But King allegedly got into the car somehow and pulled Hayek out, throwing him to the ground head first. Then he applied another beating to Hayek.
Hayek was assisted into the house, but party-goers refused to call for an ambulance.
But police were able to track the victim from the call he made and rushed him to the hospital.
He was beaten so severely that his skull was fractured and his nose needed to be restructured. Authorities say he may have suffered permanent brain damage.
Hayek is 130 pounds while his alleged assailant is 210. King told deputies no punches were thrown and that Hayek ‘simply fell to the ground when [he] was talking to him’.
Sandra Arellano, who is Hayek’s legal guardian said one more punch would have killed him. She said he had been hit so hard in the face his nasal cavity had been ‘blown out’.
‘I can’t believe how someone could intentionally hurt someone so bad,’ said Arellano.
King was arrested on suspicion of third degree assault charges and remains in jail.

Pro football great and Oceanside sports legend Junior Seau has apparently committed suicide, found by a housekeeper with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to multiple sources.
Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood said he learned of the death from police Chief Frank McCoy.
Police responded to Seau’s home on The Strand on Wednesday after receiving a call about a reported suicide. The San Diego County medical examiner’s office said an investigator was sent to the scene.
The San Diego Chargers issued a statement at approximately noon PT:
Everyone at the Chargers is in complete shock and disbelief right now…We ask everyone to stop what they’re doing and send their prayers to Junior and his family.
If Seau committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest, it is similar to the way former Chicago Bears great Dave Duerson ended his life. Duerson shot himself in the chest on February 17 — the method used so that his brain could be examined for symptoms of CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), a trauma-induced disease common to NFL players and others who have received repeated blows to the head.
Seau, a 12-time Pro Bowler and 6-time First-Team All-Pro, was selected fifth overall in the 1990 NFL draft after an outstanding collegiate career at USC. He played with the San Diego Chargers through the 2002 season, spent 2003-2005 with the Miami Dolphins, and then signed with the New England Patriots in time for the 2006 season. In New England’s perfect regular season of 2007, he played in all 16 games and started four. Seau first retires after that season, only to come back and play in 2008 and 2009 before finally leaving the NFL for good.
“I’m going to go surf,” he told Showtime upon his January, 2010 retirement announcement. Whatever happens, I can honestly say, that that probably was my last game.”
Seau is the eighth member of the Chargers 1994 Super Bowl team to pass. We will keep you updated on this story as more news is confirmed.

First, congrats to Bosh to his recasting the mortgage on his $12.5 million-mansion on Miami Beach’s North Bay Road! Still, the tallhead’s paying more on his home each month than many folks make in six months!
According Miami-Dade County records, Bosh’s now paying 3.1 percent in interests on his $7 million-loan from Deutsche Bank.
And his monthly payments now stand at $18,489!

As for Wade, before he asks to get paid — by whom, American taxpayers? — for the London games, how about he has the company that bears his name pay for its taxes?

Miami-Dade County records show the disastrous restaurant venture in which three D Wade’s Place eateries in Aventura, Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton were opened and closed within months is still having repercussions.
The IRS and state tax authorities have filed tax liens on the corporation.

The state claims D Wade’s Place has yet to settle $70,256 in state sales taxes!
And the feds want $29,365 in corporate taxes!

Sapp’s average monthly income is $115,881, according to the filings, and includes $45,000 for a final contract payment with Showtime, $48,000 for an appearance with CCA Sports and $18,675 as an advance for a book deal. His contract with the NFL Network ends in August, the filings show, and it was unknown if the contract will be renewed.

During his 13-year NFL career, Sapp played defensive tackle for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders. He was also a contestant on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”

After a bad miss with a 4-iron into the par-5 15th hole on Friday, Woods hit a poor tee shot with a 9-iron on the par-3 16th. He let the club fall from his hands, then turned in anger and kicked it some 15 yards.
The tantrum received plenty of attention at Augusta National, and it prompted CBS Sports analyst Nick Faldo to say that Woods had ”lost his game … and lost his mind.”

According to tour policy, players can be disciplined for conduct unbecoming a professional even at tournaments that are co-sponsored or approved by the PGA Tour, such as the major championships.
A person close to club operations said no one from the tournament had talked to Woods about his behavior in the second round. He spoke on condition of anonymity because club matters are private.
After finishing his round Saturday with an even-par 72, Woods said he was sorry when asked about the incident.

”I apologize if I offend anybody by that but I’ve hit some bad shots. It’s certainly frustrating at times not to hit the ball where you need to hit it,” he said. ”I certainly heard that people didn’t like me kicking the club. But I didn’t like it, either. I hit it right in the bunker. Didn’t feel good on my toe, either.”
The tour has three categories of penalties – minor (fines not more than $10,000); intermediate (fines between $10,001 and $20,000); major (in excess of $20,000).

The Shaw Lady Bears won the NCAA Division II National title Friday night in San Antonio, Texas, over Ashland (OH) 88-82 in overtime.  They were greeted Saturday night to a big homecoming celebration.

Okay Duke fans and State fans stop smiling so hard.  UNC comes up short against Kansas for a 80-67 loss and a trip back home.

No matter what the outcome the Heels played a tough game in St. Louis last night, but just didn’t have enough to pull off a win against Kansas.  Losing point guard Marshall to a fractured wrist was really felt. 

This was the final college basketball game for senior Tyler Zeller and Justin Watts and now Harrison Barnes and John Henson have a choice to make on whether they will return for another season.

Randy Moss is ready to show the world he can still be that dynamic deep threat who once dominated NFL defensive backs.

Even after a year away. Even at age 35. Even with a reputation he says isn’t all it’s made out to be.

Moss is getting a another chance in the NFL, signing a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers on Monday only hours after he worked out for the team and with former NFL quarterback and current coach Jim Harbaugh.

“I’m not a free agent. I’m a guy straight off the couch, straight off the street,” Moss said. “One thing I want the sports world to understand is the love and passion I have for football.”

Moss will fill a big void for the reigning NFC West champions in Harbaugh’s version of the West Coast offense.

While he didn’t go as far as to promise not to pout when times are tough, he did say all the right things, and that he plans to be a positive presence in a locker room known for its blue-collar, unselfish approach. Moss has no interest in reflecting on his past, either.

This is a fresh start.

“The thing about me being here is they’ve done their research on me. When it comes to the worldwide sports media, I’ve gotten a bad rap,” Moss said. “They’ve done their homework on me or they wouldn’t have brought me in here. … (The questions were) more of me not being a team player and things like that. I don’t want to get into that.”

Moss got a good vibe about the organization from the moment he was picked up at the airport Sunday night, calling it a “no-brainer” to sign. He said the organization quickly decided to “pull the trigger” — and it’s a low-risk, high-reward move for San Francisco.

“Harbaugh is a young, enthusiastic coach. I love enthusiasm,” Moss said. “A lot of things stood out to me.”

It seems Harbaugh’s throws were on target, too.

“Jim Harbaugh makes 49ers veteran emergency board: Best coach’s workout in NFL history (especially while wearing khakis & a sweatshirt),” Niners CEO Jed York tweeted.

Moss, who worked out last Tuesday with the New Orleans Saints, spent a year out of football and last played for New England, Minnesota and Tennessee during a rocky 2010 season.

He said he enjoyed playing catch with Harbaugh, a 15-year NFL pro in his day.

“Yes, he can still bring it at his old age. I don’t know, he’s probably sitting there with an ice pack or something on his shoulder right now,” Moss said. “He can still wing it.”

The 49ers can sure use him. San Francisco’s receivers managed just one catch for 3 yards in a 20-17 loss in the NFC championship game to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants at Candlestick Park on Jan. 22.

York told reporters earlier Monday at team headquarters his team needed “someone to stretch the field.” The athletic, 6-foot-4 Moss fits the bill.

Moss said he initially retired for “personal reasons outside of football” and considered making a comeback late in the 2011 season before ultimately deciding to give his body more time to train. He suffered a shoulder injury during 2010 with New England.

Moss always believed he could still perform.

“It was a decision to get back in the game because I still love the game and think I can play at a high level,” he said. “It was obvious they liked what they saw. I don’t want to let them down.”

The 49ers also are working to re-sign quarterback Alex Smith, the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2005, and have reportedly made him a three-year offer. Smith’s representatives haven’t returned multiple messages seeking an update on the status of negotiations.

“Alex is trying to figure out what he wants to do,” York said. “There have been good conversations back and forth.”

If Moss proves himself during workouts this spring and training camp, he could be a viable deep threat that San Francisco hoped it had in Braylon Edwards last season.

The 49ers cut ties with Edwards in December. Joshua Morgan broke a bone in his lower leg Oct. 9 against Tampa Bay and later had surgery to have screws inserted and was placed on season-ending injured reserve. Morgan is expected to generate his share of interest in free agency, and receiver and return man Ted Ginn Jr. might not return.

Michael Crabtree, San Francisco’s 10th overall pick in the 2009 draft, had 72 receptions for 874 yards and four touchdowns in 2011. San Francisco went 13-3 and ended an eight-year drought without a playoff berth or winning record.

Moss’ best season came for the Patriots in 2007, when he caught 98 passes for 1,493 yards and a single-season record 23 touchdowns in helping New England to a 16-0 regular-season record. He has 954 catches for 14,858 yards and 153 TDs in his 13-year career, which included a stint in the Bay Area with the Oakland Raiders in 2005 and ’06 where he produced little on the field.

Running back Anthony Dixon watched Moss’ workout Monday, and came away giddy.

“Randy Moss done linked up with us. Oh it’s about to get scary like the end of October!” Dixon tweeted.

Moss has had more than 1,000 yards receiving in a season 10 times, second only to Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, who accomplished the feat 14 times.

Moss hasn’t lost his swagger.

“I accept the challenge and I’m ready to bring the fans out of their seats,” he said, noting he considers this a chance to give back to the game. “I like what I can do for the NFL. I don’t like what the NFL can do for me.” ESPN first reported the move a day before the start of the free agency period.

After sustaining a back injury as a rookie with the Milwaulkee Bucks that required surgery, Ford has never been quite the same. A collision with Timberwolves forward Mark Madsen sent Ford to the floor, landing on his tailbone. He underwent spinal fusion surgery and missed the entire following season.

Ford has played for both the Pacers and Raptors but joined the Spurs in December of 2011 to back up Tony Parker. He has only played 14 games this season due to injury. When Ford collided with Knicks guard Baron Davis, he laid on the floor motionless for several minutes. He decided then that the risk to his permanent health was no longer worth it.

“After last Wednesday, I felt being on the floor and being in that position one too many times,” Ford said in a statement. ” I feel like that was enough for me… That was the last basketball game you’ll see me play. I played the last five years with doctor’s orders not to play. I still defeated the odds with this condition. It’s tough because I know I can still play. If I had to play today, I could play. The tests came back negative. I just felt mentally and physically, my body has taken enough.”
