I hear Hall has been in talks with CBS TV Distribution about a project that also may involve Tribune. There are no deals in place but if conversations materialize, Hall will likely film a presentation. CBS TV Distribution declined comment.

A deal with CBS TV Distribution would mark a reunion for the company and Hall. His syndicated late-night Arsenio Hall Show, which ran from 1989 to 1994, was produced by CBS TV Distribution predecessor Paramount Domestic TV.

A 98-page opinion was issued last week by a Tennessee federal judge that dismissed a lawsuit from Grammy-winning singer Sam Moore against The Weinstein Company over the 2008 film, “Soul Men,” starring Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Moore brought the lawsuit in 2009 alleging that the film about two African-American soul singers was a thinly-veiled rip-off of his part in the popular Memphis Soul singing duo Sam & Dave, whose hits included the 1967 song “Soul Man.”

The case became contentious even by Hollywood brass-knuckle standards and featured such peculiarities as Jackson testifying in a deposition that he often doesn’t watch the documentary films he’s agreed to voice. The case also touched upon so many burning legal controversies in entertainment law, it could easily serve as a primer for anyone considering the field.

Moore said his publicity rights were violated because the film was allegedly too similar to his career. Further, he alleged he’s referred to as “Sam Moore ‘The Legendary Soul Man’” and that the film violated his trademarks. He also argued that the film’s soundtrack was passed off as a project he endorsed and constituted unfair competition to his own musical works. And Moore believed that because the film was close enough to his life experiences, the divergences (the characters swear, hurl racial epithets, brandish weapons, etc.) put him in a false light.

That bumps Disney’s “The Avengers” into second-place after three weekends on top. “The Avengers” took in $37 million over the three days to push its domestic total to $514 million and become only the fourth movie ever to top half a billion dollars.

Universal’s “Battleship” was No. 3 in its second weekend with $10.8 million, raising its domestic earnings to $44.3 million. Paramount’s comedy “The Dictator” took in $9.6 million to finish fourth in its second weekend and lift its total to $41.5 million.

The Warner Bros. horror tale “Chernobyl Diaries” opened at No. 5 with $8 million. “Men in Black 3″ launched with a bit more cash than its two previous movies, which both had opening weekends of just above $50 million.

But the original “Men in Black” debuted in 1997 and “Men in Black II” premiered in 2002, when admission prices were much lower than today’s. That means “Men in Black 3″ sold fewer tickets than the previous installments.

“Men in Black 3″ reunites Smith’s Agent J and Tommy Lee Jones’ Agent K as they battle a new alien menace that travels four decades back in time to do away with the younger Agent K (Josh Brolin).

As previously reported, Jamie Foxx stars as Django, a freed slave who treks across America with Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), a German dentist turned bounty hunter. Together, they try to retrieve Django’s wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) from the charming but sadistic plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his band of ruthless slavers. Principal photography began in California in November 2011, and followed in Wyoming in February and Louisiana in March. The film is scheduled to be released on Christmas day.

Congressman Barney Frank told a black degree recipient at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth graduation, that his graduation gown finally gave him a hoodie that he could wear ‘and no one will shoot at you’.

His comments were directed at Hubie Jones, a black recipient of an honorary doctorate, who he said had ‘played a major role in diminishing inequality’.

But Jones defended Frank and said he didn’t believe Frank made the joke to offend people, WCVB reported.

‘I don’t think he meant to be mean-spirited,’ he said. ‘We do have a problem in this country. It came out at a time and occasion where it was a surprise.’

In a statement, Frank agreed that he did not mean to offend.

The pair joined forces in honor of the release of Men in Black 3, taking the stage at the film’s afterparty on the USS Intrepid in New York City, New York.

Jazzy Jeff recently revealed that he and Smith are working on new music together. While he didn’t confirm that it was a particular project, he said that they cooked up a few tracks.

“He came down like two weeks ago and was like, ‘Yo, I wanna get back into the studio, and we just knocked out some stuff,” he said. “I just think more than anything there is no set pattern, no set plan, but we just wanna go into the studio and see what we come out with. If I can get it back to the way we used to make music, you know, it used to be just me and him in the room. You don’t need no entourages and cameras and all of that and see what happens. He hasn’t decided exactly what he wants to do.”
