Work At Home: Is It The Right Fit For Moms?

In the past, the role of moms in society has been focused on the children and house chores. Moms are expected to take the responsibility of looking after the children while also contributing to the betterment of the family. The rat race in which human beings are involved in these days suggests, she cannot only assume the natural duties as mom such as looking after her children, but also should contribute financially in order to fuel the two income family structure. Failure to do so may tighten up the family’s budget and lead to financial hardship. However, performing this double role and being overloaded with work, seems to take over the lives of modern day moms.

So why not consider the option of working at home?

Consider the familiar case of a mom who gave birth to a child recently and has to return to work. As moms we have to face the emotional test that goes with such a decision. You may have had a successful career but can you sacrifice the quality time you can spend with your child. However the numbers should also add up at the end of the month. Further if you are overwhelmed with bills, you may have no other choice. But isn’t there any other way?

Let’s think about another scenario, a stay at home mom with relatively older children. She has ample free-time which she can utilize to earn a few bucks to ease the pressure of her spouse. At least this will allow her some degree of independence being not entirely dependent on her husband. Further, this may allow her to get rid of the routine chores of her day and engage in something she likes and still get paid for it.

On the other hand, job security is a thing of the past, now that there are thousands of layoffs and downsizing being implemented on a daily basis. The data will show you that women suffer the most. So any income generating activity you can apply at home is highly recommended in today’s society. Many people ask this question and maybe you also have already thought about it. “Can you earn the same amount working at home?” The answer is YES! I should also acknowledge the fact that it is not achievable overnight. In other words you will not earn the same income from the very first day you start working at home.

In time, working at home will definitely be worth it. You’ll be able to be at home with your children, take back control of your life and bring in an income.

Hardly any states license tax preparers, so it most likely it will be up to you to determine whether your tax preparer is properly qualified. Here are six things you should know before hiring a professional tax preparer:

What are the preparer’s professional qualifications? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most tax preparers don’t even have a bachelor’s degree. However, only a CPA, Enrolled Agent (a federally-authorized tax practitioner), or attorney can represent you in front of the IRS in an audit or other proceedings, so looking for a higher level of professional qualification might be worthwhile.
Is this a full-time occupation? Tax work is somewhat seasonal, but changes to the tax code and case law can happen throughout the year. Also, your questions or inquiries from the IRS can occur at any time, so you might be better off with a full-time tax specialist.
What type of firm is it? Good tax preparers can be found in anything from sole practitioners to multi-national accounting firms. There are trade-offs to each one. With a major accounting firm you get a widely-known reputation and deep resources, but you’ll probably pay more for a big-name firm. A smaller firm may be more personal and less expensive, but have less resources to put into the preparation of your return and backing you up if the IRS calls.

Loaning money out to family and/or friends can be a sensitive ordeal. A wise person advised me a long time ago that when you loan money out, do it and don’t expect it back. I believe that was valuable words of wisdom that I share with people when needed.

But you must go through IRS.gov to use Free File. Have some tax questions? Check out 1040 Central on the Individuals page for the latest news. You can even track your refund with Where’s My Refund?.
Taxpayer Assistance Centers When you believe your tax issue cannot be handled online or by phone and you want face-to-face assistance, you can find help at a local IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center. Locations, business hours and an overview of services are available at IRS.gov. Just go to the Individuals tab and click on the link for Contact My Local Office in the left tool bar section under IRS Resources.
