A contemporary musical adaptation of Langston Hughes’ 1961 play Black Nativity will be hitting the silver screen on Nov. 27.

The feature is a Fox Searchlight Pictures musical starring Jennifer Hudson, Forest Whitaker, Mary J. Blige and Angela Bassett.

Black Nativity was originally written as a retelling of the classic nativity story with an all black cast and Gospel spirituals chosen by Hughes. Over the decades, the play has been performed Off-Broadway and in theaters around the nation.

The present-day film adaptation is a musical in which the main character, coincidently named Langston, goes on a journey that helps him discover the meaning of faith family.
