A woman in Florence, S.C. said she was arrested during a high school commencement ceremony after cheering for her daughter as she received her diploma.

Shannon Cooper said Florence police officers placed her in handcuffs and walked her through the middle of the ceremony in full view of her daughter, Iesha Cooper, and all of her classmates and their families, WPDE-TV reported.

“Humiliation. I don’t even think humiliation could describe how I felt,” Cooper told the TV station.

The daughter had no idea of what was going on until a friend told her during the ceremony.

“‘They’re locking your momma up for cheering,’ is what I heard. And I was like, ‘That isn’t right because other people were cheering and they didn’t lock them up,'” Iesha said.

She was charged with disorderly conduct and held at the detention center for several hours until she was able to post $225 bail.

According to WPDE, police said school officials announced before the ceremony that anyone caught cheering or screaming would be escorted out of the building.
