Five cities in North Carolina are challenging the state’s new annexation law.

Thursday, a Wake County judge denied lawyer’s requests to stop the anti-annexation process until a full hearing on a lawsuit can be held. A full hearing, though, was scheduled for Dec. 15.

In recent months, property owners have used petitions to block forced annexations because they are able to do so under the new state law.

Cities argue the move is unconstitutional and does not take into account renters. Five cities are involved in the lawsuit:

• Wilmington

• Fayetteville

• Goldsboro

• Lexington

• Kinston

Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker is the attorney for the cities.
