What happens when a troubled young mother abandons her children and then re-enters their lives twenty years later?

This coming Saturday you will see this emotionally charged premise of “Love Me or Leave Me,” a powerful and inspirational musical stage play produced exclusively for GMC. I had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Shirley Murdoch about playing the matriarch of this family.

This coming Saturday you will see this emotionally charged premise of John Ruffin’s “Love Me or Leave Me,” a powerful and inspirational musical stage play starring Shirley Murdock, Elise Neal, Clifton Powell, Carl Anthony Payne II, Terrell Carter and Terri J. Vaughn. I had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Shirley Murdoch about playing the matriarch of this family.

OW: What was it like working on this Gospel Play?

SM: Gospel means Good news. Doing this play was just bringing good news. Filming it in a faith environment allowed us to work in Truth. No matter where you are everyone needs some good news. We need help on this journey. There has to be something truthful. These are real stories and issues going on. There are a lot of secrets that happen in families and children are affected by these things. It shows up one way or other.  It makes the viewer be able to say, “That’s me and that’s my life and maybe I change and try this.” This is to offer others a chance to maybe see that they are not alone.

OW: Are we all lost on the journey here?

SM: The thing that happens with me in my life has been my relationship with the Lord. It has been the steady of my ship. I have always been able to see him as my steady.  In life everything is not perfect and like David we become the person that we are meant to be but living through the ups and downs, trials and trouble. You learn to share your story or listen to others because somebody can get wisdom from your story. Somebody can get inspiration from your story.

OW: Do you think that we are changing for the better or the worse as a society? Has accepting certain behaviors become normal?

SM: A lot of things are generational and you have to make up your mind that the buck stops here. If you are going to have something different you have to something different. There are things like divorce, alcoholism, domestic abuse that that you must say, “hey the buck stops here.”  They may be in your family but you have to make a stand to stop the generational passing on of these things to be better. We have 5 more episodes of this particular play. So I just can’t wait to see what happens next.

“Love Me or Leave Me” makes its television world premiere on GMC on Saturday, Nov. 13th at 7 p.m. ET with encore broadcasts at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m Check your local listings.
